My Jerry has had a problem with severe constipation in the past and has been on Royal Canin fiber response dry food ever since which has kept him regular. I know that dry food is a big NO NO in a low carb diet and is not generally good for them.

I want to wean him off this dry food and would like to try to add some pumpkin to his diet. Anyone out here that uses pumpkin ? I need to know how much to give him, how often etc. Any input is welcome.

Thanks,
Deirdre

I don't have any long term experience with pumpkin and I don't use it for constipation but...

Wanted to mention...

I have read that not only does pumpkin help with constipation but...

Do you know the cause of the constipation?
*if* the constipation is caused by anal sac/gland issues, it helps with those too...so there's two ways it might help with constipation.

Our guy had an anal gland infection/rupture which lead to his dx , thats how I learned about pumpkin so I just started working it into his food again last night to try to prevent that happening again. Also I read good things about it for insulin control.

Good luck with the pumpkin :)

I've given Bama about 1/2 teaspoon twice per day either mixed into his wet food or with another teaspoon of water by itself as "dessert" at mealtime. He likes pumpkin. Some cats don't. The wet tends to be low in fiber. When I tried to convert Bama over to a strictly wet diet, he experienced his worst constipation issues even though I added additional water to his meals. He also had a poor appetite so mealtimes became quite an ordeal to get him to eat. Currently he is eating 1 3 oz. can of Luvsome [Kroger brand] plus about 1/2 to 2/3 cup of Dr. Elsey's Clean Protein Chicken formula DRY food per day. [He weights just under 17 lbs.] It is low carb and 95% of protein is animal based.

I believe the additional fiber in the dry is what helped him the most. I also add about 1/3 of a capsule of Renew Life probiotic to his evening meal.

I fed Sheba a teaspoon pumpkin twice a day for a few years. Started for diarrhoea. It works for both diarrhoea and constipation. If you are not going to make your own make sure when you buy the tinned that it is plain pumpkin with nothing added.
Freeze it in ice cube trays then bag in plastic bags and use as needed.
