Okay, this is really gross, but I have a question about anal glands. I have a civvie who loves it when you play with his tail; tonight when I played with his tail I saw that his anal glands (I assume that's where it came from, anyway) started oozing a whitish fluid. Yuck. It smelled like poop. Is this something I should be running to the vet immediately for, or is it normal (I don't think so) or will it right itself (probably not likely is my thinking)? I guess I'm asking if this is an emergency or not.

Don't know about the white. Here's an equally yucky video showing veterinary anal gland impaction treatment. The guck that is removed in the video is not white.

I am wondering if it's an infection or abcessed, since it's oozing white. I have my cats needing them to be expressed when full, but never infected. And it's a dark discharge upon expression.

How is acting, any scooting of the butt, does it appear to be painful? Is he defecating okay? You can google infected anal glands in cats and get more info.

If he is acting like he is okay, I would wait til Monday and get him to the vet then. He definitely needs to see a vet, IMO. If he is acting like he is in pain or sick, I might not want to wait til Monday and treat it like an emergency.

He's acting just fine, no butt scooting, using litter box with no problems, no excessive licking, etc. White made me think infection, too. I'm calling his vet first thing tomorrow morning to get him an appointment. Just thankful it doesn't appear to be an emergency situation! :)

One of my cats will "stink butt" us if we surprise touch his backside... like if you get him under the tell to get him to move out of the way or something. we are VERY careful to avoid that area. hahaha I had a dog that would stink butt every time he went to the vet. HORRENDOUS stink. haha

Yuck, lol!

Hi....
I am a groomer and I express lots of anal sacs....yes it is such a glamorous job:rolleyes:
Anal sac fluid usually smells a little fishy-it is pretty pungent much more than poop-
I am glad you are going to see the vet just in case they need to be expressed.
Usually they rub the butt on the floor and lick often if it is leaking ..... good luck tomorrow:bighug::bighug:

Thanks, Jayla. :bighug: I just now got phone and internet back after a huge storm last night, so I probably won't be able to get him in today.:( But I am setting up the next available slot for him to go in.
