Good morning all. BooBoo seems to be getting higher and higher readings at the time when the insulin is tapering off and her numbers seemed to be slightly higher in the peak times too. Wondering if i should up the dose a tad, or if me starting her on the wet food is a good idea now. Someone is sending me some Lantus to get me started on that so i can switch off the Humulin, but it will still be a few til I receive it. Should I start her on all wet today and get her ready for the Lantus? I'm hoping the wet will help bring those #'s down too, but i don't want her to be too low when she gets on the lantus by switching her wet food then. What do u all think???

I had a question about how many cans of wet do i feed my cat now that she is going on an all wet diet and how often? I used to just leave dry out all day...

Re: Q's about dosage

since you are testing, I think I would start her on the canned lo carb wet. more than likely, you will have lower numbers because of that and since lantus will be arriving in a few, I would also drop insulin down to 1u BID. numbers may be higher initially but the fact that wet food will be introduced SHOULD cause a drop in BG so it would be safer to also drop insulin dose JMO

Re: Q's about dosage

If you are switching foods I would do it now instead of raising the dose of N. Then when you get the lantus you can start out with her new diet and on a low dose and go from there, all nice and fresh :)

That sounds great! Will do! Any fav food you guys would recommend? I did look at the food sheet (I think it's called Jan&Binky's Food List), and saw some for Special Kitty which they have at Walmart and is usually cheap, or should I go with Friskies? or 9 lives? Which do u all suggest?

Re: Q's about dosage

Stephanie, when you have time you should read all you can about Lantus, how it works, building up the "shed", etc. It is totally different than N insulin and the more you can learn the better it will be when you start using it.

Re: Q's about dosage

When choosing food, there are a few factors to consider....its not just about the 'numbers'...

1. other medical conditions
2. quality of food - eg. 'chicken' is actual chicken meat whereas 'chicken byproducts' is the other stuff. Fine in some amounts but not as the main protein source. Also look at whether there are any other fillers like liver, etc. Finally, do not have fish as the main protein source as it is not appropriate for the species and is higher in phosphorous and also potentially heavy metals, and can be an allergen. That said, cats love it.
3. cost. this is a real factor and it pays to shop around. Plus, grocery market chain brands are often (not always) as good as fancy feast
4. will your cat actually eat it? My cats won't eat wellness, which sux because it comes in large cans (affordable) and is high quality.

when starting out, I bought a variety of foods before we settled on what worked for us. And the cats sometimes go on strike with a particular flavour so we change it up a bit.

Re: Q's about dosage

special kitty is fine. I used that on my cats before I switched to homemade raw and the 2 fosters I have now eat special kitty. I buy the large cans. next cheapest would be friskies Pate formula at sams or costco. box of 48 5 oz cans in 3 flavors one being a fish flavor and I forget the other 2, beef and something else I think. no gravy, chopped, sliced or dices. I use these due to money constraints. buy what you can afford and what cats will eat. I also add water to feedings to increase water intake

edited cause I must have moved something somewhere and sentence did not make sense sigh

Re: Q's about dosage

Dian, I feed some of the chopped flavours that have wheat gluten in them. My cats don't have issues with gluten and its not a carb so I'm fine with it...

Re: Q's about dosage

some of the Special Kitty's are low carb, as are several Friskies and 9lives has some too.

not sure if your walmart will carry it this way but the one by my house has a 12 pack of 9Lives for $4.42 and there's 3 flavors in it. one box of it has all low carb (super supper, chicken dinner, and liver & bacon i think it is). i've yet to see it packed that way anywhere else but i buy those alot, especially when there's a "$1.00 off a 12 pack" coupon in the sunday paper. actually, now that i think about it, i've got about 20 of those coupons left. they expire in a couple weeks. if you want, i can drop a few in the mail to you, just PM me an address. i'm in orange county so they'd get to you within a couple days i would think.

and just an fyi, there was a $1.00 coupon in this past sunday's paper for Friskies too in case you've got those laying around. my walmart is up to $0.46/can on the friskies though right now. they have some multi-packs too though that would be slightly cheaper but i can't remember the flavors they have packed together as to whether they're all low carb or not.

Re: Q's about dosage

good to know. I always was under assumption chopped, diced and sliced was usually higher carb cause they have gravy. none of my cats or fosters have wheat gluten issues. so I have to buy what I can afford. trial and error. as jen said, you can buy 1 or 2 cans of whatever and see what they like. I have 1 cat that ate raw, stopped and then I bough the very cheapest food (aldis) just to mix into raw to get her to eat it. tried a little better food and she hated it. no friskies, no FF, no nothing except extra cheap. low class cat for sure

Re: Q's about dosage

We get 24 cans (5.5 oz) cases of Friskies at Wal-Mart that has 8 cans each of Mixed Grill, Ocean Whitefish and Tuna, & Turkey and Giblets that are pate style for right around $11 or $12. That our bunch loves and are all low carbs. They also have a 32 can pack as well but I believe those are all fish flavors to I reserve getting those for special occassions. But the 32 can packs are like $15.

I was getting them 9-lives which as luck would have it that they loved until one day the Wal-mart near my house was out of them so I got them Friskies..Now 9-lives are a no go with my bunch so it is Friskies all the way. I also went on Friskies web-site and send them a nice little note about how well my diabetic cat was doing on their product and they sent me 6 coupons for 2 free cans any size of their product. Sometimes just a nice email to the company will get you coupons!

Re: Q's about dosage

I think samsa was 48 caNS FRISKIES FOR $17 SOMETHING. will see if I an find receipts
edited. $18.72. I priced special kitty in larger cans. and the equivalent in oz. was a few dollars cheaper than the friskies

Re: Q's about dosage

I ended up getting a 24 pack of 9 Lives that was suggested and I checked the flavors out on Jan & Binky's page... It was only $8.24 for the 24 pack at walmart!!!

How often to feed a cat when getting on all wet food diet

Just wondering now that i am switching to a wet food diet for BooBoo, how often and how much do I feed? I used to leave the bowl out all day of dry food, so I'm not sure what to do now.
