Q. regarding Chocolate, high #s

I have Chocolate's SS on my signature. But in short I gave her her first dose of Pro Zinc tonight, 1 unit. Her pmps was 417. I just tested her and shes 364 at +6. She's drinking a lot of water, she tends to drink a lot but really went at it when I refilled her bowl just now. I picked up the dry which is mostly EVO now so she won't snack on that overnight. Should I put the dry out when I feed her wet at 7ish am and then pick it up when I leave for work at 9? Or leave it out all day? What to do what to do. I don't want to deprive her of dry food and I guess the dry EVO is lower in carbs than I even thought so is it ok to leave it out? I don't want her to lose any weight she's a good weight. And I suppose I should stick with the 1 unit even tho she will probably be in the 400's in the morning since I just started the dose tonight correct? Also...I really want to start testing her for ketones as I never did before..what's the best realistic way to do that?

Leave her low-carb food out. Cats like to snack and diabetic cats are especially hungry.

I have a bowl of EVO out all the time. It is for the benefit of my non-diabetic who likes dry. It has never caused a problem with my diabetic cat.

Leaving the food out all this time is fine. Cats are grazers by nature, plus if Chocolate's bg starts to get too low, she can self-regulate with the food that's out. Do I remember correctly that Chocolate is resistant to switching to wet? She will be much thirstier even than a normal diabetic because of the dry food. Wild cats get all of the moisture they need from their food, so feeding a cat dry food will make them seek out water in other ways. Most of our fd cats are on all wet diets (which most of us also add water to) and they get a good amount of their water that way...and they still drink tons before they are regulated.

About ketone testing. Charlie isn't a secretive pee-er, so I would tape a ketone strip on the end of a long, thin stick (skinny ruler, bbq skewer, dowel rod), and wave it around *ahem* "under there" while he was peeing. All you need on there is a splash. For more secretive cats, some people cover the litter with saran wrap and test in the puddle that forms, or fill a spare litter box with clean aquarium gravel (so it doesn't absorb), take away the "real" box so she has no choice but to pee in the gravel one, and then tilt the box and test in the puddle.

Good luck!

No, Chocolate eats wet fine, I just don't want to deprive her of food. I'll start adding some water to her wet to get some extra water that way as well. That's a good way to test the ketones...how often should it be tested?

I used to test about once a week, but honestly don't know how frequently other beans it. Charlie has never had any issues with ketones, so I never tested very often, and now I don't test more than once a month. But ECID, of course, and until you achieve some sort of regulation, you should test with some regularity.

Cassie is recovering from DKA & the vet said to check ketones daily. If #s are high I'd check as often as possible. If doing well once a week is sufficient.

Waiting until she goes to use the box and then trying to catch urine seems a little unreasonable to me...if I were to put a plastic liner or a tray with gravel or whatever to catch the urine, is there a time period where the urine would just be no good to test for ketones?

The fresher, the better. I don't really know the time frame, but apparently old urine breaks down and can give you a false result. I have to catch my boy in the box because I have 2 cats. Of course, I haven't managed a test in a couple of days either, for the same reason. My mom can get the dog to pee on command. Too bad it doesn't work for cats.
