I got my Rx for PZI but it's not available through "human" pharmacies, and basically hardly any of the vets carry it either. I paid about $120 for a 10cc vial directly through my vet but I'm wondering if anyone has a lower-cost option? Also, does anyone know if the u40 syringes are available at regular pharmacies?

Not a bad price. I've seen it from $80 -120, depending on the area of the country. U40 syringes are only available through a vet. (ProZinc is an insulin only for animals so needles/insulin are only obtainable from vet). You can use U100 syringes with ProZinc IF you use a conversion chart. U100s are available from drug stores. Here's the chart

No there isn't a "generic"...but there IS a "PZI" insulin as well as one called "ProZinc"...they are similar, but not the exact same insulin

I found out that I can get the 100's at WalMart but yeah, they sure don't carry the 40's. I'll talk to my vet and see if she's OK with using the 100's. They only gave me 1 bag of 10 and it's an 80-mile round trip to get more, at least from her.

Oh, OK. I wonder how long ProZinc has been around. That will give us a general time frame in which they may release it as a generic. According to my pharmacist, according to U.S. law, a drug has to be on the market for at least 9 years before it can be released as a generic, at least for human medications. Probably the same for veterinary, I would suppose?

BCP PZI is another insulin for animals and they will send your vet a free 5 mL sample for you to try. Otherwise, search for ProZinc online at pet supply stores such as Fosters and Smith, California Pet Supply, etc. Be sure to add in the shipping costs in your pricing.

I recall the ProZinc has been available for about three years. I doubt that there will be a generic since there is not tham much demand for a cat-only insulin.
There are compounding pharmacies that will compound a PZI insulin just like ProZinc and they have been doing this a long time since I used that compounded PZI (an aqueous protamine zinc suspension of recombinant human insulin) in 2002 with my first diabetic cat

calvetsupply.com has U40 syringes - the cheapest are .10 each if you buy 100 or more. Shipping is free if you spend $60 or more - I don't know how much otherwise. - Ruth Ann

I prefer using the U100 syringes marked in half units (using the conversion chart) because it's much easier to increase or decrease in smaller amounts. The syringes are much cheaper, t00.
