Hello,

PZi is no longer available in the UK (gosh, I had no notice, just told it was stopped) and the vet wants to change to Caninsulin - I'm not keen as Cattro sometimes has a real low pre-shot reading (can be 2.9) - but last time I spoke to the vet about Lantus he was not at all willing to discuss it and said that his sources still feel that the Caninsulin is best for most cats.

What is the protocol for changing from PZI to Lantus please? I might be able to persuade him, that is if Lantus is available here? Anyone know for sure?

(Please don't tell me to change vet - this is the second practise I have used and am very happy - others nearby are large companies who do NOT put your pet first, I feel that money is more important to them)

Thanks,
Kay

There are several people who have been on this Board from the UK and who are Lantus users. I don't know if there is any one who is currently posting, though. Is ProZinc available in the UK?

I've linked an article from the Journal of the American Animal Hospital Association. It notes that glargine (Lantus) and protoamine zinc are the two insulins that are recommended for treatment of feline (or canine) diabetes (see the bottom of pg. 218). Perhaps this article would be of interest to your vet.

There is nothing that is particularly different about switching from PZI to Lantus with regard to dose. However, I would encourage you to read the starred, sticky notes at the top of the Board. The strategy regarding Lantus use and dosing is very different than with PZI (e.g., dose changes are based on nadir, not on the pre-shot BG level).
