Hello to All :
Due to Frank's recent medical problems ; medications needed to help him ; the stress , all added together have thrown him back to where he needs insulin.......a BG of 357 tonight. Frank had been on a honeymoon for over 5 years . When he was taking insulin i was using PZI ....... have heard that Idexx is no longer making PZI , is this true ? Tomorrow , Monday the 28th , i must start him back on insulin.....if no PZI could you suggest a brand to buy. Frank did so well when he was taking PZI. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

There is an insulin similar to PZI called ProZinc which some people here use. The other two insulins that are popular are Lantus and Levemir. That work differently than ProZinc because they build up a shed.

You might want to check out the insulin support groups - there is one for each insulin - to see which one might work best for you and your kitty.

You have read correctly. PZI by Idexx is no longer made. Not sure if any stockpiles are available, maybe someone else can inform on that.

As to where do you go from there - the "replacement" for PZI is called Prozinc and you can read more about from the Prozinc ISG sticky: viewtopic.php?f=24&t=32799

BCP PZI is still being made and that info is also available in the PZI sticky.

Since you had good success with PZI previously, you'll probably want to stay with one of the available forms of it.

There have been major developments in longer acting insulins in the past 5 years, as the human insulins, brand names Lantus and Levemir, have proven very effective for cats and their remission rates are quite high, running upwards of 70% if certain methods are followed. They are different acting than PZI and would require further knowledge for you to use effectively.

If your vet has Prozinc in stock, that would probably be the easiest for you to start with. Lantus and Levemir are available at any pharmacy, but would require a prescription from your vet.

Hope that helps. Good luck.
