Yesterday our 13 year old cat was diagnosed with diabetes. Our vet sent us home with 2 cans of Purina DM and a bag of the same in the dry version. Now we read on your site that the dry Purina DM is not recommended nor is any dry food. If you must feed dry food, absolutely do NOT feed Purina DM because it is poor quality for a diabetic and also quite expensive. Is that still true and shouldn't our vet know that? Thanks for any advice!

Welcome to you and your extra sweet baby!

Yes it's still true that it's not good food for a diabetic...take it back to the vet and tell them your cat wouldn't eat it. They won't lose money, the vendor will pay them back for the bag too.

Why doesn't your vet know? Good salespeople! Every vet that stocks these foods are visited by salespeople that fill them with SO MUCH crap. Many don't have time to research so they, unfortunately, just parrot the same thing. My longest term diabetic (over 2.5 years) was having weight issues - vet tried to sell me Hills 'diabetic' food. I asked him why I would want to give my diabetic cat something with HIGH carbs....his response? "It's the science behind it...it's the mix of complex cards..". Hummm...a cat doesn't use complex carbs...he gave up....

BIG HUGS! You landed in the right place! There's hearts of gold here!!

Agree. Vets have to treat a range of diseases over a range of species, from iguanas to dogs, so they can't know everything. They may get one workshop in vet school on Feline Diabetes, presented by Purina reps!

This vet, who is a specialist in Feline Diabetes, explains why wet food is best. www.org. You might print off the explanations and send to your vet?
