Shaak is having soft whipped consistency poop with the new food, 9 Lives, I am not worried about it being soft whipped because she did the same thing for a few days when she switched to FF. However she was on Insulin last time and I was not worried about what the pumpkin would do to her BG. Now she is OTJ and I am worried pumpkin will mess with her BG and throw her out of remission. Does anyone know what pumpkin does to our babies?

Hi Cathie . I feed pumpkin to Elmo daily so will be interested as well . An alternative til then that I use for soft stool is Slippery Elm. I use it in capsule form, empty a capsule, mix in about teaspoon water then slowly syringe it down. Should be given 1 hour before or after any medications tho as it gently coats the whole GI tract and may temporarily interfere with med absorption.

A lot of folks use pumpkin and as long as it's plain pumpkin as opposed to pie filling, I don't think it will have much effect at all. If it stops any GI issues, it might serve to lower rather than raise BG levels.

okay, thank you both. I am going to try my florastor first and if that has no effect then I will use the pumpkin. Funny to be worried about it, she used to eat it every meal when she was on insulin.

One of my FD kitties gets a tablespoon of pure pumpkin or squash every days and it has never affected his glucose levels. It does help keep him regular though and he actually thinks he is getting a treat when I give it to him. I find he prefers the home-made to the store bought (and so do I) ;)

Be very interested to hear how you get on with the Florastor, Cathie. The Noodle's having a hard time with her GI system and the Proviable I'm giving her doesn't seem to be helping much.

I had to mix Shaak's 1pm feeding with her 4pm feeding, too much florastor in it, she turned her nose up, but after dividing with the next feeding's food she ate it with no problem. I just mixed it and then gave her half and saved the other half for 4pm. I am going the emergency route to stop the diarrhea. She always does this with new food, at least all the times since February she has. Meow Mix to Royal Canin (gave her bloody stools, I got a refund on that bag of kibble), then to FF Chicken Feast and now to 9 lives with chicken.

I will keep you posted Mogs, I gave it to her several weeks ago and within 24 hours her loose stools were gone. Hoping for the same this time.

Thanks, Cathie.

Kwestion: Does Shaak ever have problems with nausea during a food change? If yes, does it pass as she gets used to the new food?

no, no nausea. Just soft whipped stools.
I'm having awful trouble feeding LĂşnasa. The Sheba gives her bad stools and it triggered a bout of cystitis but other foods I've tried are either nauseating her or she won't eat them. Spent most of yesterday and the day before in tears. :(

I have continual issues with Keno's stools being soft. Florastor worked great for a while, but now it's not working so well. I haven't tried Proviable but I do give that to my non-diabetic IBD kitty and it helps her.

We just finished a food transition that I did very slowly and she was having the stool problems before that.

I started using Slippery Elm Bark yesterday - 1/8 t per day. I have the powder and I mix it in her first meal of the day. If that doesn't work, I may try pumpkin.

Good luck - I know how frustrating it is!

@jacereske If this does not work I will most likely try the slippery elm bark. where do I get it from? I know I am not good at measurements and I worry that I am not putting enough Florastor in her food
I got mine at San Francisco Herb Company (I live in SF) and it is available from them via mail order. Here is some info and a list of places to get it from Tanya's site.

If you get capsules make sure they do not have any fillers - only SEB powder.

@Cathie and Shaak Ti So far so good with the SEB. Keno's poop has firmed up considerably. I'm giving 1/8 t once a day.
Hi Jeanette,

I'm really glad you've found something to help.

My little Noodlebug is being started on prednisolone today. Weekend was not good; she now has yellow poops (on plain chicken, rice and broth - refused to eat the Felix) and she is overgrooming her abdomen. :( Urine lab analysis showed sample was sterile so vet thinks the stress is giving her idiopathic cystitis. He hopes that that the steroids will help with any bladder inflammation as well as the GI/itching issues. I've got some bupe for pain relief, too.

How I wish manufacturers would not mess around with food formulations. :(

Mogs, thank you. It has been a struggle with Keno and I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that the SEB continues to work.

I'm so sorry your Noodlebug is having such a tough time - poor baby. I hope the Pred helps. Have you tried SEB? It can help with GI issues.

Jeanette

I know the diarrhea is from the new food, what I don't understand is why nothing will help it go away. I am starting to get more concerned. I don't have the money for expensive cat food. basically anything over .65 cents is more than I can afford. Shaak did so well on FF and now her blood sugars rise on FF. So the nine lives did not make her blood sugars rise but we have been living with pudding style diarrhea for almost a week now, if not a week. Have used Florastor to no avail and now using renew life probiotics and it does not seem to be doing any good either. How long if ever does it take for a cat to get used to a new food?

@Cathie and Shaak Ti -

Maybe ask your vet if B12 might help or whether they can suggest anything (e.g. probiotic with kaolin as one of the ingredients). Wish I could suggest something else to help, Cathie, but I'm in exactly the same boat over here. It is very worrying and I truly feel for you.

Saying a prayer that Shaak's poops will normalise very soon.

I have not tried the SEB yet, I was told the renew life would work better

Everybody here has their "favorites"...what's worked best for their cat(s) in the past.....take those recommendations with a grain of salt though..... just because it work on their cat doesn't mean it'll work on yours.

If after a week of using one thing, if you're still not getting the results you want, it's time to move on to something else

Any chance you might check and let me know? I'd like to try it for my little Noodler (still Yellow Cowpat Central here :( ).
