? Puddle Poop, how worried should I be? (DKA Recovering)

Hello! I am still working on getting the spread sheet up and running, I am very new, please forgive me.

My cat has dark reddish stool that is partly formed and partly in a puddle. Here are a few pictures for size and color reference. I have seen this could be a dire emergency. So I figured I'd get more info on it. She has had between 100-400 on average for her blood sugar on a human meter for the past few days. I don't have any info from before that since I just got the device recently.

  • Age: Older, over 9 years old
  • Sex/Neuter status: Female, fixed
  • Breed: Siamese Mix
  • Body weight: 10 lbs
  • History: Recently Diagnosed diabetic. Treated for Ketoacitosis in hospital about a week and a half ago. She has been given insulin and high protein food. She has been acting very well, plays often, is friendly, and airs grievances when upset.
  • Clinical signs: Puddle Poop, dark in color
  • Duration: About a week and a half. Since she has returned from the hospital stay.
 
The recent DKA does concern me. Is she acting ok otherwise? Is she eating enough food/getting enough calories? What food does she eat?

You mentioned the 100-400 range...is she spending more time on the higher end of that, or where?

What insulin, what dose, how often?

What food is she eating? Blood in stool does concern me, but it's a bit hard to tell from the pictures if it's blood, lighting, or maybe just something in the food. If you touch a paper towel or napkin to it, is it pretty clearly reddish?

I should add I'm really not well versed in DKA or GI issues, so ultimately I'd say if you're worried to take her in.

Would you mind adding to your subject line…post DKA…it’s important we identify posts DKA kitties.

Regarding the poop, I would ask your vet. It could be she had a normal stool followed by some loose stool, or she was constipated and the loose came first around the constipated stool, then the constipated stool followed. Her digestive system could be a bit out of routine following the DKA.

regarding the DKA……
  • are you feeding extra food to your kitty since she came home. It is important that post DKA cats eat 1 and a half times as. Many calories as they normally do to combat the ketones returning.
  • Also don’t skip any doses of insulin. I am going to tag @Bandit's Mom to he,l you set up your spreadsheet as iwell t is important to get that up and running.
  • Also if you can get your signature set up, that will help us k low about your kitty. HERE is a link
  • Are you testing daily foe ketones in the urine? This is very important. You will need a bottle of Ketostix from a pharmacy or Walmart.
  • Are you giving extra fluids?
What insulin and dose are you giving? And what type of meter?
 
  • How she is acting: Pretty dang good for the most part. She is an old grumpy cat well before all this and I'd say she is about there if not a bit more active than ever. As far as I can tell, she is ok otherwise.
  • What is she eating: She is almost certainly getting enough calories. The vet originally told us to refrain from feeding her often after she started doing better. However, one attempt at that made her blood sugar drop way too low so she now gets two 3 oz cans of Tikki Cat Seafood in the morning (9am), one can 3oz Tikki Cat Seafood around 3-4 PM, and one more at 9PM, plus one fourth a can of Blue Wilderness Grainfree Chicken for senior cats.
  • Where her blood sugar sits: Usually she reads at about 250ish at around 6 PM. I have very few readings.
  • Which insulin, how much, how often: ProZinc, two unites, once at 10 AM and once at 10 PM.
  • Cat poop color: The pictures are very color accurate, and the color can be slightly more red if dabbed on a papertowl.
  • I will be setting up the signature properly as soon as I have access to my computer again; I can't fathom how I'd do it on my phone.
  • Ketone testing: I just got the strips today, and will be doing so going forward. UPDATE: Just did a test, she came back inbetween the none and trace amounts colors. If she has ketones in her urine, it is a very very small amount.
  • Fluids: She has lots of water and I add some extra mixed in with her food bowl if she doesn't pass the pinch test. If her skin bounces back even a little slowly I also add Potassium powder as well, as per advised by the hospital when she left.
She HATES getting her shots and getting blood taken. Because of this, I assume her readings are a little higher than they would be otherwise.

Do you give her a treat/reward every time you give the shots and do the blood sugar?

I am surprised to hear this, because it is so important that post DKA kitties get extra food to combat ketones. And testing foe the ketones daily is also very important.

It sounds as if she is doing very well post DKA. I would continue with the extra food for a while and definitely test daily for ketones. She is prone to ketones so I would always test her in the future if she is unwell or has any infection etc.

Ok good, that checks off most post-DKA concerns. Like Bron said I'd call vet in the morning, it doesn't appear to be a lot of blood so I think it can wait til morning (as always, if worried, take to emergency vet). I'd save a stool sample if you get another one, they may want it.
