He seemed to have a good day today. I noticed though that he seems to be after my food a little more than usual. I have been giving him a half of a can of Fancy Fest but tomorrow going to switch to Fancy Fest and Friskes. Was going to do a 1/4 of each. Would it be ok to maybe give him a 1/4 of one in the afternoon to hold him over to I feed him at night? Just trying to figure out what's best for him. Don't want him to gain more weight. He weighs about 18 pounds.

His numbers for today. AMPS 131 @ + 12. 69 @ + 6. 120 @ + 11.5. Holding my breath. But maybe he will be off OTJ soon.

Thanks-
Niki and Oreo/Pudders.

Yes, Niki,
You can split his meals into portions, and giving him small snacks outside of just the AM and PM feedings is a great idea. It looks like his pancreas is working to try and keep his numbers down. Small meals or snacks can actually help, because it will encourage his pancreas to help by producing insulin on its own.

Would you say he's at a good weight now? Has the vet ever given you an idea of what his "ideal weight" should be? In terms of cans, how many cans of FF or Friskees is he going through in a 24 hour period? We can figure out how many calories he's getting and try to estimate how many calories he "should be getting" based upon his weight. The calorie info for all the canned foods on Dr. Pierson's charts are available. Just let us know how much food you're giving him, and I'll try to do the math. It isn't an exact science, because every cat burns calories at a different rate, just like people do. But we can come up with a "ballpark" number.

The vet said he should weigh about 10. He eats about a can of FF in 24 hours. He hasn't had Friskes yet. Just transitioning to that. So maybe figure that one out. And not FF.

Ok, there's two formulas I look at. One is from Dr. Lisa's site:
Required calories per day = [13.6 X optimal lean body weight in pounds] + 70

Most female cats should weigh a nice, lean 10 -11 pounds.

Males should fall into the 11 -13 pound range
.

If his ideal weight is 10 lbs., that would come out to 206 calories per day.

The other one is simpler: 20 calories per day, per pound of ideal weight. So that would be 200 per day.

200 calories per day should keep a normal healthy 10 pound cat at 10 pounds.

A can of Fancy Feast classics contains roughly 90 calories according to her charts. The numbers vary for Friskees Pate flavors, but they range from 150-190 or so.
One can of FF is not enough. He could eat two per day and still probably lose weight and get down to his ideal weight over time.

I think, you could either give two cans of FF or a can of Friskees per day at least, and he would gradually drop some pounds to get closer to the 10 pounds your vet suggests.

I want to give you a "heads up." Normal BG is in the 50 - 120 range. Pudders' numbers have been wandering above that range. I can't tell if this is an upward trend indicating that insulin is needed. One thing you can try is to feed a small amount at around +9 to see if that helps to bring the pre-shot numbers down. I realize this could be challenging during the AM cycle given your schedule. Is there any chance you could use a timed feeder? I also think getting a before bed test will tell you if Pudders' numbers are heading up at night.

Also, just as an FYI, on the Health board, they use 200 as a post and ask for help number. We use 150.

I want to support Carl's point. You may want Pudders to be at a healthier weight. It's just like with humans, though. A crash diet is not the best way to keep weight off. If Pudders were my kitty, I'd be slowly reducing his calories. There's a really good section on Lisa Pierson, DVM's website regarding feline nutrition on obesity and weight loss.
