Puckett was diagnosed in 2010 and has been on 1 unit PZI am & pm. Up till now he's been doing very well but absolutely would freak out if I tried to test him. About a year ago he developed a tumor in his ear which has required daily cleanings and ear drops. And he's positively started loving having his ears rubbed. Well, this morning he got his insulin at 6:20 AM and ate good. I laid back down as I didn't have anything else I had to do so early. Got up to find him very uncoordinated and having difficulty walking. Yup, he was having his first hypo. I fed him and he came out of it just fine. Called the vet and made an appointment next Monday for a fructosamine test. I had recently bought a new meter that requires a very small amount of blood and while I was sitting on the couch with him I thought I'd try and see if he'd let me test him. Woo hoo ... he allowed me to test him with no fuss at all. It was at 6 hrs after his insulin injection and his BG level was 119 with the human meter. It's the FreeStyle InsuLinx. Not sure how the numbers relate to kitty numbers. But because I didn't have to have much blood it was easy to test him.

Got a question! In the mornings he's too hungry to try and get a BG reading. I asked the vet about this and he told me to go ahead and feed him and then as soon as he finishes do the testing then the insulin. Will that work?

As long as you test before the food gets into the bloodstream, you're OK - within 10-15 minutes.

And congrats on joining the vampire club!

I would be testing immediately after he eats in the AM so doubtful if the food would have gotten into his bloodstream at that point.

You could also give him a small snack, 1 Tablespoon of food to calm him a bit and then test him, then give him the rest of his food and shoot while he is eating.
