I contacted Vetmedica the manufactures of Prozinc regarding shelf life. Here is there reply. "Thank you for your interest in Prozinc. Prozinc has a 2 year shelf life from the date of manufacturer. Therefore, we expect the product to remain stable whether opened or unopened through the date of expiration listed on the product." Sarah, Veterinary technical Services

I think most people figure their insulin lasts about 6 months and a little more, if refrigerated, but hope they will chime in. I have not seen anyone use it for two years. I wouldn't want insulin that had been sitting for a year, even with that longer expiration date on the package.

I have used a bottle for 6 months. I alsp had a bottle expire before I finished it; I used it for a couple weeks due to an ordering snafu at my vet's. It did work, but not as well; I felt it was inconsistent. I've niticed this towards the end of a vial as well, but it seemed more pronounced in this case (almost 6 months & expired).

I think you're fine to use a bottle for 6 months, or until it expires. I doubt you can get 2 years active use out of a single vial.

Good point Lisa. There's only 400 units in a vial, so if you get more than six moths out of it, you're shooting about 2u per day max.

My bottle expired in December. I have a new bottle, so should I start using it now? I probably have 2-3 weeks left in the old bottle.

As long as you're not seeing any real difference is how he's reacting to the insulin, you're probably okay.

Well, I think that I may start the new bottle as it seems that it doesn't last as long as it use to. I will be home on Friday and will attempt to do a curve using the new bottle in case the new insulin is stronger and causes him to drop too low. Thanks.
