ProZinc or Glargine

My boy cat was diagnosed with diabetes and they started him on Vetsulin. That didn't help so we went with ProZinc. He's up to 5 units twice a day. He's still drinking and urinating a lot. Should I try Glargine? What would the comparable dose of Glargine be? I want to know if I pay the $200 for Glargine how many units will he need? Sorry but cost is kind of a factor. I pay $185 for the ProZinc. I would surely pay $200 if it would work better for my little man. I'm sure I'm leaving something out, as it's late and I'm tired. I'm hoping some answers can be given with the info I've provided so far. If not please let me know what more info I need to provide. Bless you all

Lantus (glargine) is a great insulin to use. I think you can start Lantus at the same dose as the current Prozinc dose but it may depend on your cat's blood glucose numbers and whether your cat is ketone prone or not. Do you test your cat's blood glucose levels at home daily?

What are you feeding your cat? Diet is an important part of managing the diabetes, just like it is for Human diabetics.

That’s fine in this instance. I was going to give the link for the inexpensive sources for glargine. But do not do this for new ProZinc users. I am capable of helping them over on the ProZinc forum and in fact will receive an email directly to my Outlook inbox whenever someone posts on the ProZinc forum. Right now, it’s primarily just me helping the ProZincers on that forum.

There are also some biosimular insulins to Lantus that cost less. They are also glargine insulins and two of the brands are Basaglar and Semglee. They work the same as Lantus. I have used both Lantus and Semglee and did not notice any differences between them for Charlie except for the cost. A couple options for getting insulin cheaper is to order it from Canada or check with your local pharmacies to see if they offer discount cards. If you have Walgreens in your area, I registered a discount card under my cat's name and was able to save a lot of money that way on his insulin.

If you are not home testing, I would recommend you start doing so and consider starting at a lower dose.
