prozinc, can I shoot at +11 if bg over 200?

hi...thought I'd post here as the PZI forum looks a bit quiet

well because Angel was getting pre shot readings of below 200 on caninsulin and I kept delaying until his bg was over 200, I've ended up with injection times of around 12 am and 12pm which is a nightmare as I have to set the alarm to check his nadir. Angel started prozinc on Wed and I'm trying to slowly tweak his dosage time until its something like 7am and 7pm, but on Monday I have a hospital appointment at 9.30 and because I don't drive I shouldn't think I'd be back much before 12 anyway.

Today he did not have his jab until 11.45 as I had a very disturbed night. We had dreadful storms and Angel was out, I went out calling him, got drenched and he strolled in cool as anything about an hour later. I'm not sure about timings with Prozinc, do I just leave it as it is and grit my teeth so he doesn't get his Monday am jab more than an hour late, or can I test at around + 11 /+11.15 and shoot then if his bg is over 200? That should mean I can give him his shot at before I leave on Monday.

Gave myself a fright today, thought I'd od'd him! I inadvertantly pressed the syringe and the insulin went splat over his fur. As I know he didn't get any I went ahead and gave him a proper shot, then remembered that flea treatment is absorbed under the skin and thought maybe insulin was the same. I panicked as he'd already gone outside and I couldn't see him. Looked up on internet and it seemed to say everything was fine, but called the vets to double check. He reassured me that it was fine, and Angel's nadir was normal and so is he...phew!!!

The advice Ruth gave me was that it's ok to go within an hour of the usual time either way, so I think you can start to bring it back gradually (it'll be much easier for you). We were on holiday recently and my lovely neighbour did all of Bert's shots, so I couldn't in all conscience demand that she was on the doorstep at 7.30am every single day, which was why I checked with Ruth.

We've been slightly looser with times recently as we're supposed to inject after Bert has eaten, and he doesn't know we're on the clock, bless him, but if he hasn't eaten by 8.30 then I do it regardless.

The good thing with prozinc is its a longer acting insulin, but you don't have to be strict. If the numbers are safe earlier than it is ok to shoot just be sure to monitor. Prozinc and caninsulin are very different. When Hidey was first diagnosed they put him on vetsulin, from what I here its the same as caninculin, his numbers were crazy and still super high. Between diet change and switching to prozinc Hidey went into remission within a month or so. The good thing with prozinc, is your able to chase the numbers. Good luck with the prozinc, my fingers are crossed for you.

Angel had finally got 'excellent control' with the caninsulin for the few days before we started the trial. I'm starting to see similar numbers now, but I'm testing with an alphatrak so in reality they're actually lower than they were, so that's promising. He doesn't have anything now that is over 7% carb.

I actually got a couple of readings below 200 at +12 with the caninsulin, so maybe Angel has a slightly slow metabolism. He is a VERY laid back cat, any more laid back and he would be horizontal!

Glad you like his name lol. My husband still makes fun of him, he loves him but makes fun of him. LOL he was never Hiedi the little girl. We were told when we got him he was a she, but it was never spelled like that or meant like that....He would hide under EVERYTHING!!!!! Then we found out he was a boy, I wasn't going to change it because of that. My name is Samantha by the way. Angel seems to be doing good on the prozinc. What you may want to also try, if your not already, is mini meals. In order for Hidey to get the calories he needs I go through 6 cans of food a day (between 3 cats) but I have to do mini meals. For Hidey to stay diet controlled he has to eat every 4-5 hours so I got an auto feeder and feed him at 7 am, 12 pm, 5 pm, 10 pm, 3 am. He would always JUMP for his morning bg.

Angel does not think his name is very butch either, but he's probably never seen Buffy the Vampire slayer!!! He was named as a tribute to his littermate who died in my arms at 10 days old and became an angel. The owner of the mother cat (a former friend) had rushed the kitten (don't even know if it was he or she, but I named it Aslan) to the vet as it was not thriving, the vet said there was probably something wrong and it would most likely die anyway but she could try hand rearing. I said I would do it, I was up every 2 hours giving the little one special formula, it survived overnight but late the following night had a fit and died. Baby Aslan (or Aslana) is buried in my garden. Louise said I could have the pick of the litter but I didn't want to know. Next thing about 3 weeks later she turns up with this kitten from the same litter with an injured leg, his brothers and sisters were leaping on him so he needed to be kept apart from them until he was better. Needless to say, once his leg had recovered he only went back until he was old enough to be weaned...and I adopted his sister too.

His BG is too low to shoot early so I'll give him another test (he is going to love me, hit the vein last time!!!) at +12. I've found I'm having to do mini meals with the wet food, especially in this weather, I give him a small amount and if he eats that I give him another small amount.
