Hello! My 16 year old cat, Marie aka Weenie, was diagnosed as diabetic yesterday. I went to the vet thinking it would be CKD so I was not prepared for the diabetes diagnosis. Additionally, her kidneys are beginning to show some signs of wear, too. But her phosphorous was in normal range at 5.4 so the vet said we will probably have to let her eat what she wants (she is picky and a puker) and treat the diabetes. Additionally, she needs a dental. That being said, I have spent all but 3 hours of the last 24 researching and purchasing necessary supplies. My biggest concern right now is that our vet started her on 3 units of ProZinc every 12 hours with no mention of home testing. Marie has been on a variety of canned foods prior to diagnosis. (There is dry, too, but she rarely eats it and we have now moved it out of her reach). We were basically buying what cans she likes and feeding her when she's hungry. She eats small amounts all day and night. Now with the diagnosis, I would like to start reducing her carbs. I should mention, she also has arthritis and occasional mild constipation. Her glucose was 487 at her diagnosis. She is 14.63 pounds. We have done three doses of 3 units. (I have all of her testing results from yesterday but did not want to post too much). Marie will be back at the vet on Feb 14th to test her progress and have a dental. My question, I believe, is should I be starting at 3 units? If not, how do I back off of it now that I already gave her those doses? I have testing supplies now but am just starting to watch videos on testing. I know lower carb food is going to affect her BG, so I'm just nervous. I'm getting foods that are lower carb and lower phosphorous just so we are addressing both issues. Also, when you say to withhold food for 2 hours prior to her insulin dose and testing, do you then feed them after you test but before you give insulin? Or do you withhold food for two hours, test, and give insulin. And then give food when it is done? I'm just afraid of withholding and then giving insulin only to find out Marie decided she isn't hungry. Any help or advice is greatly appreciated. Sorry for the rambling.
