Hi all! Haven't posted in this forum in a while but I've run into a rough patch with Bailey and just wanted to see if anyone had some advice, or even just words of encouragement.
Earlier this month Bailey had to go to the vet for ruptured anal glands (I posted about this in the general health forum). He had to go back again on Monday for the same problem, and this time the glands were so impacted that they had to give him anesthesia so they could lance and drain them. If this continues to be a problem, the glands will have to be removed, but I'm really hoping it doesn't come to that as I've read that can lead to incontinence problems...
He's back on Clavamox for the next two weeks and, as at the beginning of the month, I've noticed a sharp drop in his glucose. Obviously when I test and see he's in the normal range, I'm not going to give insulin, especially during the week when I'm working and can't keep an eye on him. I've read before that it's not uncommon for this to happen if an antibiotic is working to clear up an infection that may have been affecting the glucose all along. But last time we finished up the Clavamox (nine days) his numbers started coming up again so I started giving small doses of insulin again but he was dropping really fast (the SS 2016 link in my sig is current).
I kinda figure things were weird the last couple of weeks mostly because the problem with his anal glands hadn't been truly resolved, but I worry about giving insulin at all now while he's on the Clavamox just because his glucose level seems so unpredictable on it.
No specific question here really, just curious about others who have had kitties on ProZinc and Clavamox and what your experience was like. I'm reading up on digestive issues now, hoping to prevent having his anal glands removed, and basically just trying not to feel overwhelmed again (as I did when we started our diabetic adventure over a year ago). We're taking this 12 hours at a time right now, and that seems to be fine so far, but I'm trying to think of longer term recovery stuff too.
