? Probably a stupid question about hypo possibility w/ Lantus

I am sure this has been answered before somewhere, but I cant find it-

Okay, I know there is no possibility of hypo if there is no insulin, but what about the depot? If you skip a shot, can the depot still cause a hypo?

Lets say you shoot at 5am, but skip the 5pm shot- can they still go too low later, after 5pm, because of the AM shot , or because of the depot and there is still insulin in their system?

No....the depot releases insulin very slowly back into the bloodstream (which is why lantus works so well) so no insulin=no hypo

And there's never any such thing as a stupid question here!

Thank you- you are always so good to answering my posts. Katie is getting her lowest numbers yet today, and again, I have to leave her for several hours on Monday night, so I am thinking about just skipping her PM shot so I dont worry (and have another meltdown).
Take a look at her SS, you think I should continue with a fat half? I am going to get a + 8 here in a few minutes.

You mean skip the Monday PM shot?

If that's it, it's just too early to say....let's see what her Monday AM cycle looks like
Do you think in general the fat .05 is an okay dose for her right now? I just got a +8, it was 120, so about the same as 1.5 hrs ago. Her preshot # tonight was the lowest I have seen too, at 152.

Also I am still monitoring her urine (figure it wouldnt hurt and I always check for ketones) and her urine has shown no glucose the last 2-3 days, so apparently it is not getting high enough anymore to cross the renal threshold, where it was showing extremely heavy amounts of glucose before.

And yes, I would be skipping the Monday 5pm shot. I am just thinking ahead......lol

I'd really like to see some more mid-cycle tests....if you can't get them during the week due to work, it's even more important that you do a complete curve on days off

I think she's probably going to need to go back up in dose, but without more testing, I hesitate to "officially" recommend it

Thanks, Chris.
I am testing when I can. She is still not happy at all about this, and I still cant manage her by myself, so I have to depend on DH's help, which is a bit of a problem sometimes.
May I ask why you would l think a dose increase may be in order? Her numbers right now are the lowest they have been. I know I havent seen any greens yet though. I was happy to see the 117 and 120 tonight. I was nervous about shooting at 152 earlier though, geez, will I ever get over these nerves?!

The only way to get over them is to take the plunge!!;)

Katie has already been OTJ once....getting a second remission is much harder than the first one so we usually have to be more aggressive .....the only way to promote healing in her pancreas is to get her into healing numbers as much as possible (that's true for all cats, not just ones coming out of remission)

While it's nice to see her drop below 120, she's still running too high to promote healing
