Our poor kitty had become very lethargic so we took him to the vet and recieved a diagnoses of diabetes. We began treating with Lantus immediately but were unable to get him under control. We switched to a new vet (a feline specialist) and after many diagnostic tests we have come to the diagnoses of Primary Familial Hyperchylomicronemia leading to secondary insulin resistance. His blood glucose curve is still high and flat (470ish all day) at 3 units of Lantus twice a day. His fasting triglycerides were still over 2,500 and over 8,000 without fasting. Our current treatment plan is to switch him to a low fat low carb high protein diet (certain tiki cat and weruva cans) and being administering Cell Advance™ 440 by VetriScience in addition to his 3 units lantus. If we dont see any improvement in triglycerides (and hopefully insulin resistance) in about a month then we are going to begin medication to bring the triglycerides down. We may still run a test to totally rule out acromegaly but this has all been very expensive already.
Has anybody else had any experience with feline hyperlipidemia? If so what worked for you? Did you require medication or did diet management alone do fhe trick? What medication?
