I have been really a lot of different posts here and on the lantus groups and a lot of people seem to pretest, feed and then test again (30 min later) and then decide how much insulin to give. I haven't been doing that. I pretest, feed and give shot. Which is the right way?

Thanks,
Martine

I only test before food and shot. Many users when they have an abnormally low BG will test 30 minutes later and then decide to give insulin. Is that what you are seeing?

With Lantus you do not need to wait 30 minutes after feeding to retest bg and give insulin. Most Lantus users just test, feed, and give insulin. If bg is hovering jut below 200, the cut off number for newbies to give insulin, then you do want to wait after feeding and retest bg to see if the level have gone over 200 so you can give the insulin.

With some insulins, like Humulin N, you do want to feed some food, wait half an hour, test bg, and give insulin. Having some food in the tummy will sort of soften the effect of that particular insulin.
