Hey all. So i only have like a weeks worth of insulin left for oj. I've been trying for the last week to get it refilled online where i ordered it from originally. I just got a call from the dr that had originally prescribed it saying since he's no longer a patient there they wont approve the refill. My vet is out of the office until next week. I have the original paper prescription still from when he was originally diagnosed but thats 2months old now. Would a pharmacy still take it? When they process prescriptions do they call the prescribing dr to verify or just fill it? He really cant run out or we're going to have problems

Isn't there anyone at your new vets office that can get in touch with your new vet, or another vet that works there?

Check out the supply closet, I see a few people selling Lantus pens, just read through all the posts , PM them also
@Luxe

The issue is the prescription i have is from his old vet so anywhere online has to verify it and they're going to deny it since he goes to a different vet now. I thought since it came with 10 refills it would have been fine like when i refill my own prescriptions. I just click the refill button on the site i used and it would be done. But nope. Why offer refills if they're just going to deny them?? I was going to try bringing the paper prescription to walmart but i wasnt sure if they would just take it and refill it or if they call to verify because if thats the case its just going to get denied again. Ughh. He cant run out. He has surgery next week and recent dka so its important he gets it

Im not sure. I know a different vet there probably wouldnt prescribe it since he's not their client. I might have to just really drop his dose so i dont run out. But i'll check the supply closet

I assume your new vet never gave you a script yet for Lantus
I would call the office anyway and explain the situation , that you need it , his dental is coming up.
I assume the new vet will be doing the dental.
I would call

Last resort try bringing it to Walmart, hopefully they won't check

Do you by any chance know any human diabetics who use Lantus and who might have a spare pen they could give you? You could then return a replacement to them when you get your own Rx filled.

I unfortunately do not :( im going to try bringing the prescription to target tomorrow where i get his syringes refilled

When you say your new vet is out of office until next week, does that mean the beginning of next week? That seems like more than enough time to fill a new script locally, isn't it? Can't imagine they would have a problem with filling it since you've established the relationship and they've had to consider the diabetes diagnosis and treatment thoroughly in setting up the dental.

The vets office just called me back to verify what insulin he's on and they said they could probably have a script filled out for me for pick up tomorrow. Im probably going to have to pay the extra and get this one filled at walmart or target as my vets is only open until 1 tomorrow and closed on sundays so there will be nobody around for a couple days for somewhere online to verify the prescription

Prescriptions are usually good for the # of refills writen on the script or the date givenon the script. The date is usually for one year after date the script was issued.
script filled out for me for pick up tomorrow.
I live on VA and vets and human doctors can call in a script for all but controlled drugs to a pharmacy. They can also fax it if necessary.

Thats why i was confused the first vets wouldnt approve the refill. They weote it out with refills so whats the issue?? In all honesty they probably wanted to get more money out of me with another office visit. She said they wouldnt approve the refill if i didnt come in for a curve or frustosamime test. No thanks.

I never heard of a pharmacy calling vet/doctor to get a refill if the refill is with the # of refills on the script and is with the time limit of written on the script. My pharmacies will call vet/doctor if the script runs out and I need a new script.

I ordered off vetrxdirect.com i checked their site and it said if you were putting in for a refill they still had to check to make sure it was valid. So they faxed them today i guess looking to verify and that's when the vet called me. Im going to try and pick up his prescription tomorrow before they close but i might have to wait until monday. I was supposed to be off tomorrow but now i have to work and i already have to leave on my break every day for his shot so theres no way i can make both

Would the timing work out to have vetrxdirect just contact the new vet for the prescription information? Or is the timing too tight to rely on the mail order at this point?

I don’t think they will check with the doctor especially if you’re paying out of pocket. You can fill Lantus at any pharmacy. Check GoodRx for price comparisons or go to Lantus website and register kitty as a patient and get a discount card from them.

man that really annoys me when vets act like that.

Hi, sorry just seeing this now. I am in Queens, NYC! Please let me know if there's anything I can do to help or if you can't get the refill in time and need to borrow a pen. I can't believe your vet would potentially allow your cat to go without insulin just to make another visit fee ugh! My cat was diagnosed in September but I haven't needed to refill the prescription yet so now I'm worried I might run into the same problem as you eventually... Haven't gone back to the vet since she admitted she didn't know what she was doing and gave dosing instructions anyway.

I think at this point it would be too late. But i'll definitely hold on to the prescription for the mail the next time

Yup. They already got 3,500 out of me because they're an emergency vet primarily. And they didnt even call to check up on him or give me his results to xrays or ultrasounds. I had to get that info because someone i know daughters works there and they sent me pictures of them. So absolutely terrible patient/doctor relationship but had no problem calling today to say i needed to bring him in for tests

@Luxe morning how did you make out getting the Lantus
Heyy so i got the script. I originally was looking on walmarts online pet pharmacy. They sold the pens single for 88$ autoship. I thought maybe they would have similar prices at the store but no luck. They only sold in the 5packs for almost $600. So i tried target. They also only sold the 5pack but it was 465 and she said she had a coupon she could try to get to work for me. When i got there it ended up being 290 for the 5pack so she got the price down considerably for me. I put all 5 in the fridge so as long as they stay in there they should last me the year or hopefully longer. Im hoping after his dental i can lower his dose and a pen will last me longer than 2months. Im starting him on a new pen tonight. I've been super busy with work or sick the last week so i've only been doing preshot tests and maybe one other one during the day. He's been back in the 500s and im wondering if its the insulin because nothing else has changed. Theres hardly any left, less than 20 but its starting to get cloudy/a few bubbles in it. So maybe its losing its strength. He's still doing good. Active, ketone free, hungry. So we just gotta make it 4 more days and then get that dental under his belt

Thank you for the offer! Ended up getting a 5pack today. And that was the first vet he went to when he was in dka and hospitalized for a few days. Never called once to check on him or give me any test results but had no problem calling to say they wouldnt approve a refill until he came in for a curve or fructosamine test. His new vet is good with me doing curves at home. He's been going every two weeks just to get an antibiotic infection but they are finally going through with his dental so hopefully after that the vet visits will be far or few inbetween. Now i know for the next time dont wait until like the last week so i dont have a panic attack worrying if i'll get it in time. Mine was diagnosed in november but he's on a fairly higher than most dose so i went through the pen in 2months. Hopefully after his dental he can maybe go down to just a couple units a day. Im so sorry about your vet! I dont know any down in the city area to recommend. Im up in the hudson valley (newburgh) area. It took 3 vet offices (4 doctors) for me to find one that worked. Good luck to you and your sugar baby!

FYI, my CVS would not allow that coupon because it’s for humans not cats. It really depends on your pharmacy and their staff. Not all would take it

Im not sure what coupon they used for me. But the price dropped from 465 to 290 so i'll take it. She said she usually has trouble finding coupons that would work for pets but i guess she found something

oh great! I'm glad you found something that works for you and that you were able to get a decent price. :) I always reorder when I have 1/2 a bottle left... then I keep 1/4th of it in the fridge just in case the new one breaks so I'm not panicked waiting for a new vial to arrive.

so glad to hear you were able to get the pens and at a relatively decent price. I bought my first vial in september for $300 and the pharmacist was trying to tell me it needed to be discarded after 28 days and that it wasn't worth using on a cat. the nerve of some people! Luckily I was able to get 3 pens from DCIN since I'm unemployed so I have that to hopefully last me a long time.
Best of luck with your sugar baby! Hope the numbers can come down so your dollar can stretch more.

Good idea. I wasnt really sure when to reorder and then the issues i had made me definitely regret not getting it sooner

Keep us posted on how he does. Wishing him all the best :bighug::cat:

Thanks and will do! The last two nights i also had to work overnight so i had to give his pm shot two hours early so that might be why he's been having higher numbers too. So now im working on just getting back to his regular shot times
