I went to my vets office to get more alpha trak test strips, they happened to be out, and asked me if I had a prescription, which I guess I do. I then went to the an other vet's office in town, and was told that if I did not have a prescription with them they could not sell me the test strips.. ??? WHY? Im getting the feeling this is a racket.

Never heard of needing a prescription for test strips. Are you in another country? I think you can buy alpha trak test strips online from sites like Amazon and pet sites. But you can save money by switching to a more inexpensive meter like Walmart's Relion Micro or Confirm glucometer. You'll be saving money on the strips. You don't need a prescription. Here's a good glucometer guide:

Yes and for a fraction of the cost of what you're paying for Alpha Trak strips. Plus no hassles from your vet. If your vet has an issue with you using a human glucometer, show him or her the glucometer guide in my link above or find a new vet. A good vet will support use of a human glucomter.

Thanks, I don't see the link you mentioned, can you repost the link?

Most vets won't sell stuff that they "prescribe" to non-clients unless another vet has called them first and made arrangements. Even things that don't need a script like food, strips, etc. If it is only sold in vets' offices, they usually only sell it to their clients, i.e. you have a script from them. Or, once in a while if your vet has contacted them with a script and gotten agreement that they will fill it.

Overall, I have yet to find a place that beats Walmart's prices for strips. And you can order from them online, too.
