Preparing for hypo

Moe is finally getting into the 200's!! What kind of treats should I keep on hand to give him in case he gets too low? I already have Karo. I've looked at the food lists but didn't see anything about treats. Also, what treats can I give him as a reward? He's starting to get annoyed with his ear being pricked so I thought this might help.

My cats like Pure Bites and Bonito flakes. Both low carb, freeze dried.

For low numbers, first try regular lo carb to see if the numbers rise. Then higher carb wet or just the gravy from higher carb. If below 40 and headed down, dry food. All are good to have handy. Write HIGH on the higher carb food, so you don't feed it regularly by mistake.

200s sound good. Way to go!

Hi Kathy and Moe,
I just went back and read through your posts. Have you switched Moe over to all wet food yet? Is his still peeing inappropriately? Did you get him checked for a UTI? Sorry for all questions, just want to have a clear picture.

We use Prime Taste Treats - freeze dried chicken treats.

200 is a great number. How long since you gave him the last shot?

you're asking what kind of treats would be higher carb right? to use if his BG level gets too low?

if so, any of the regular cat treats would work if you ask me, all the ones we used to give but ditched when our cats were diagnosed with diabetes (pounce, friskies, etc....)

if you mean which can you give now that are diabetic friendly, aka: low carb, then any meat that is freeze dried is good (beef, tuna, chicken, salmon, cod, etc......)

but like was mentioned, if the level is in the danger area, i've found the gravy off a higher carb food works the quickest.

Gravy based canned food works well to raise blood glucose numbers. Fancy Feast is one popular brand. Even something like junky Science Diet canned (at something like 26% carbs) will work. Keep a few cans in the house. Most people use high carb canned food for hypos instead of high carb treats.

For healthy low carb everyday treats, see this list for suggestions: http://felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=9172

Moe is completely on wet now. He started using the litterbox again after I put one where he was peeing inappropriately. He isn't peeing as much so I haven't caught him to get a sample I could take to the vet instead of having to take him into the vet to see if he has UTI again. Trying to avoid stressing him out with a trip to the vet. He gets 1 unit every 12 hours. This morning's number was 344. I wasn't able to test him at +6 today and that's when his number has been the lowest.

I was wondering about treats if his BG level goes too low as well as low carb treats for after I have to prick his ear. Sounds like I should have high carb wet with gravy handy for if his levels go too low. It's been added to my shopping list as well as the low carb treats. Thanks!!
