Prefilling syringes?

This is a repost from the main health forum...

We are leaving to go on vacation in a few weeks, and my father-in-law will be taking care of our kitty. He's given him his insulin shots before, but I was wondering if it's possible to prefill syringes up to a week ahead of time. I just want to make it as easy as possible for him! Oh, and we are using ProZinc.

I know that I have seen it is not recommended. I am not sure why......what you could do is premark syringes with tape or a permanent marker so he could draw up to that amount?

The lubricant in the syringe may contaminate the insulin if you prefill.

A reference syringe with a mark on it is a better option. Also, have him go through the process so you can make sure he has it down correctly.

This is great information. My brother prefills my Dad's syringes for his insulin all the time and has for years so the CNA can give it to him on the days she is there for his PM shot. Now I need to tell him not to do it I guess.

I have never filled my cat's in advance per say, but I do fill it about 45 mins early so it can warm up on the counter before I give it to him and I read that on a veterinarian website. They said it is more comfortable going in to the cat if at room temp. Is that ok to do?

Holding it in your hands for a minute or two is enough to warm it up, Joyce. I wouldn't think leaving it out 45 minutes is good for it, especially as the weather gets warmer.

I would agree with Sue about leaving the pre filled syringe out to reach room temp. It would almost be the same as leaving the bottle of insulin out to reach room temp, which is not recommend.

;-)

Now filling right before his shot. That is what this board is all about..learning what is right and what isn't :?

Proteins like insulin carry a charge & can be attracted to the plastic that syringes are made from, so the longer it sits in the syringe, the more you lose to the walls of that syringe.

I filled up right before the shot & gently rolled the syringe between my palms to get it closer to body temp before I stuck it in Milo.
