I posted about Harley having ketones a while ago. Someone suggested buying a Precision xtra meter because the strips test ketones. I cannot find my post to see where I bought it. Does anyone have an address for a company that sells this meter.

You can buy this meter at most drugstores. I got mine at Walmart. Just be very careful on the price - it should be $15 - 25. I saw it at Walgreens for $90!!!!!

You will probably need to order the strips. Best place is from e-bay...they are quite expensive if you buy them retail. Be sure the strips are for ketones, not glucose.

I use it since 2008 and the ketone strips wrap is purple and the blood glucose strips wrap is blue. You want the purple. Over here the strips only comes in a package of 10, and are very expensive per strip then.

This is how I did it for Simba the learn what was a normal b-ketone range during the days for him, and what was alarming.
I took the higher cost if testing him a few times throught the day. This way I found he was always on around 0.2 in b-ketones. So one day when he seemed not well and I tested him he had 0.7 and that was enough for me to tell that something was going on so I went straight to the animal hospital with him.

I don't test him often for this now, but I still now from this previous set up what his normal range is, and checks if he seems off.

I also got my meter free with the purchase of ordinary strips for it. I don't know about the combo test strips that tests for ketones, but the regular glucose ones seemed to sip slowly and needed more blood than all the other meters I have.
The test strips are really expensive, something like 10 times the cost of the glucose ones, so since I did not like the other strips, and I have never had ketone issues at all, this meter is sitting and collecting dust here,
I do think it's a good meter to use if your cat is prone to ketones.

My cat is very ketone prone. I have the meter and only use it when I have no other choice and I am on my second meter because Abbott sent me a free one cause my results were so wacky. Your best bet is to get it at Walmart or someplace like that if you really want it...but I will always say that getting a urine test is the most reliable way to test for ketones. At least on a cat. Just my opinion, but I test pretty often.

Gotta disagree here. Ketones show up in the blood hours earlier than it shows in urine. As far as reliability, I personally never had issues and haven't heard any any other complaints in my two years here. I believe that Jojo always recommends that cats that spend a lot of time in high numbers (or those known to be ketone-prone) get the Precision Xtra. She certainly recommended to me that I get it due to Boo's very high numbers.

You can disagree, that's why there are so many voices here..I use it to tell IF there are ketones. I agree that it's very good for that. But as to the level of ketones..it hasn't worked for Alex. He literally shouldn't have been walking with the recorded blood ketone numbers I got on the meter while at the same time reading trace on the ketone urine sticks. I would have discussed this with Abbott but they would have hung up on me if I said Alex was a cat.
