Hi all - After listening to vet suggestions for insulin amounts for some time, we shifted to the “start low go slow” approach based on information on this group in October and Joey has had his best three weeks most recently with substantially better blood glucose numbers. He is on 2.5 units of Lantus every 12 hrs.
Joey started having diarrhea Friday night through to last night (for approximately 36 hours) - no idea what is causing it and it isn’t something he usually experiences. He also was sticking to one room in our house and was more lethargic than usual. In discussions with our vet we continued to monitor him. Today he threw up his food ( about 6 hrs after eating it) so we took him to a local emergency clinic. Unfortunately weren’t able to perform an exam or do any testing as Joey is very difficult to handle at the vet (he hates it). The vet believes it may be pancreatitis as he did have it in May - our options were to either sedate him to get testing done along with fluids or take him home and give him cerenia and bupe.
Sedation seemed extreme to us but now we’re second guessing ourselves about whether we should have done it to try to get a conclusive answer on what’s going on.
he has been eating normally until vomiting today, but tonight ate 3/4 of what he normally would. We’re keeping a close eye on him.
Wanted to post on this group in case others have experienced this. We’re worried about him.

Im so sorry for Joeys pain and your worry Brittany.
Yes, quite a few of us have cats with pancreatitis ( its such rough thing for the poor cats). I thought that tiffmaxee had posted a few things on pancreatitis. I will try to dig to find them. There are a lot of good resources on pain relief, meds for nausea and feeding. Best wishes to you and joey.
oh and for a bit of hope, i have two cats with chronic pancreatitis. Its rough on them, but they have come survived the flares.

This post is a good one for you: A Primer On Pancreatitis

Could you take the 911 off now? While pancreatitis is an issue, it's not a medical emergency. We've had many kitties where with acute or chronic pancreatitis. As per the article, it can be managed with the right tools.

My Sheba used to get pancreatitis once or twice a year. She mainly went off her food (a big red flag as she was a great eater normally) and she was in pain. Initially I used to take her to the vet and he would give her an injection for nausea and one for pain and often some sub Q fluids. As I got more used to dealing with it I would have the pain and antinausea and subQ fluids at home to give her myself
It’s a matter of supporting them until the pancreatitis settles and they start to eat again and their diarrhoea settles (if they have that.)

Max had chronic pancreatitis for a few years before becoming diabetic and continued to have bouts of it. The first sign for Max was always that his appetite would be reduced or tank. Ondansetron would be started immediately. For worse attacks buprenorphine was adde and sometimes sub-q fluids.

Hi all - Joey took about 4-5 days to feel better in early Nov when I reached out to you all. Thank you for the support. Since then he’s been doing really well (BG numbers slowly improving) but tonight had diarrhea again. I’m worried it’s pancreatitis again - have you seen it come back within 3 weeks?
