I haven't been here in a few years, our previous sugar kitty, Cosmo, passed a few Summers ago and even though one of his brothers was kind enough to develop the same condition, we've had great luck in reducing his numbers with all that we learned here. The problem now is our newest addition, IV. ("Ivy")
He's about 2 years old, he put on rapid weight the first 9-12 months or so we had him, because he had access to his brother's high-protein food during the days while we were at work and topped out at about 23lbs. We've since started dieting slowly and while his weight is coming down slowly, he developed crystals and inability to urinate. They may very well have been forming for a while and we just didn't see the signs. About 2 weeks ago, he spent 3 days at the Vet and after being catheterized twice we had to opt for the Perineal Urethrostomy procedure. He came through with flying colors, after 2 more days stay he came home with the Cone of Shame but was in great spirits from the minute he returned. Here's where it gets a little messy.
He's been urinating fine, but most of the time right after he starts, he bolts from the litter box & goes sprinting up the stairs from the basement & through the first floor, still urinating. I've taken to either shutting the basement door if I see him heading to the boxes to at least contain the mess, or breaking out the Cleanup Kit with Nature's Best & paper towels and following the path he's left. (Luckily we have mostly wood floors but the area rugs, scratching posts and anything else in range is taking a beating.
I guess I'm looking for anybody who has had this surgery and may have suggestions. I've been keeping him in a spare bedroom during weekdays with water, litter, etc. but he just doesn't seem to be getting any more comfortable with his "new parts" and we're at a total loss. The follow-up to remove his stitches is this week, but we've already asked the vet if this is even close to normal, and they say it's nothing they've encountered before.
We're losing our wits here!
