I haven't been here in a few years, our previous sugar kitty, Cosmo, passed a few Summers ago and even though one of his brothers was kind enough to develop the same condition, we've had great luck in reducing his numbers with all that we learned here. The problem now is our newest addition, IV. ("Ivy")

He's about 2 years old, he put on rapid weight the first 9-12 months or so we had him, because he had access to his brother's high-protein food during the days while we were at work and topped out at about 23lbs. We've since started dieting slowly and while his weight is coming down slowly, he developed crystals and inability to urinate. They may very well have been forming for a while and we just didn't see the signs. About 2 weeks ago, he spent 3 days at the Vet and after being catheterized twice we had to opt for the Perineal Urethrostomy procedure. He came through with flying colors, after 2 more days stay he came home with the Cone of Shame but was in great spirits from the minute he returned. Here's where it gets a little messy.

He's been urinating fine, but most of the time right after he starts, he bolts from the litter box & goes sprinting up the stairs from the basement & through the first floor, still urinating. I've taken to either shutting the basement door if I see him heading to the boxes to at least contain the mess, or breaking out the Cleanup Kit with Nature's Best & paper towels and following the path he's left. (Luckily we have mostly wood floors but the area rugs, scratching posts and anything else in range is taking a beating.

I guess I'm looking for anybody who has had this surgery and may have suggestions. I've been keeping him in a spare bedroom during weekdays with water, litter, etc. but he just doesn't seem to be getting any more comfortable with his "new parts" and we're at a total loss. The follow-up to remove his stitches is this week, but we've already asked the vet if this is even close to normal, and they say it's nothing they've encountered before.

We're losing our wits here!

I'm sure it all feels very strange to him. Poor little guy!

I've heard that crystals - particularly in male cats - can be very critical. I had one catheterized several years ago with that condition, but that was as far as he went with them as the obstruction passed.

Good luck with his recovery. Only thing I know to recommend is to keep him confined (like in a bathroom) so he can't do the mad dash after going. It's probably just a matter of him getting used to the feel of going again.

Good luck,
Lu-Ann

My Lightening had the PU surgery twice but never had problem with leakage. Did they have any problems catheterizing him?Sometime there may be temporary damage that cause the leakage.

Thanks for the encouraging suggestions, I can't see confining him except for during the day when we're not home and then he seems to "hold it" until we let him loose. I've debated about following him to the litter box, and trying to reward him in some way for staying & finishing his business. That may not be realistic.

Hmmmm, I'll ask. I know the 2nd time they had to do it the Vet mentioned that she used a stiffer catheter than she would have liked, because he was already a little inflamed & the softer one wouldn't get through. Poor guy, pains me to think about how traumatic that had to be.

I suppose he may just need some more time to adjust and we'll have to ride it out as best we can. Oh, I'll attach a pic to prove that cone didn't get the best of him!

Thanks again~

Poor little guy! I really hope he feels better very soon. Also, hope he gets the circus cone off soon.

When you get a chance read Dr. Lisa Pierson section about this. I skimed over it so I am not sure much of what it said, but there is a section with pictures about PU surgery.
