Post Dental--Are Antibiotics Needed?

CJ had a dental today. A tooth was extracted. The vet is prescribing an anti-inflammatory for pain but no antibiotics. I was expecting an antibiotic to be prescribed. Has anyone's cat had a dental done with no antibiotics prescribed?

Hey Cat Ma, what other thread was it discussed in; I am interested in reading it as Bubba has a dental appt. on Thursday and we know that he will be losing 2 teeth. His vet covered him with antibiotics prior and said that he will RX more after the procedure. I'm not sure how I feel about more being RX
 
@Bobbie And Bubba @granadilla I was expecting to take home a sedated cat but CJ has been a very hungry, alert tiger! She doesn't exactly look like herself yet but is walking quite well, better than I anticipated. She was miserable going to the vet, though. She cried the whole way over. I couldn't give her anything to calm her beforehand and I forgot to spray her carrier with a calming spray. I am sure her BG was very elevated today but I am not too worried. She had a teeth ready to fall out. So I am glad the dental was done.

Glad to hear CJ is doing well! It is never fun to have to go to the dentist, but she will feel better now and you won't have to worry about an infected tooth. :bighug:
 
@granadilla, Bonnie's dental was postponed. She hasn't been eating on her own much for the past week so I am getting her checked out again before she gets the dental done.

She wasn't showing signs of distress or trouble with eating but I am very happy about not having to worry about an infected tooth. CJ has already forgiven me for taking her to the vet. :)
 
Wow, I can't believe CJ has already forgiven you! How easy going!

Good luck at the vet tomorrow with Bonnie. I hope she gets a clean bill of health. :)
 
Goodness, I still have a ravenous tiger! The vet recommended I not give her much food tonight but she didn't eat since last night. She's acting almost as bad as when she was first diagnosed with diabetes. I am sure this is temporary but it brings back memories of when she'd stare me down till I fed her!

She's quite hyper, too. Thinking I may have to give her something to calm her down. Is this normal or do I just have an unusual cat?

You definitely have an unusual cat, think of all the things she has overcome! :) Marshmallow was always hungry after dental work too. Not hyper though, she was usually a bit sedated. Maybe CJ is just very glad to be home and that's why she's hyper.

Did you give Marshmallow as much as she wanted to eat? CJ seems to be a bottomless pit tonight.
CJ is definitely happy to be home. She just gave me some more head bumps.

Wow, that's GREAT! Bat-Bat goes for her dental appt. bright & early tomorrow morning. You're so lucky, seeing such a nice green # from CJ; I can pretty much guarantee myself that we won't be seein' much green around here for awhile afterward ... <sigh> (Ha, won't be seeing much green in my wallet, either ... not after they hand me the bill!:p)
 
@Cat Ma, Yes, I let Marsh eat as much as she wanted. The vet didn't think it was a problem and she never threw up after her post-dental meals. Maybe because I gave her lots of small meals instead of one big meal. CJ's BG is great!!

@Robin&BB, good luck tomorrow with Bat-Bat's dental!
 
@Robin&BB Good luck and keep us posted on how Bat-Bat's dental goes tomorrow! I hope Bat-Bat has a chance of going green again.

@granadilla I fed CJ small meals tonight but she wanted to be fed constantly. She has finally calmed down.

@granadilla , @Cat Ma - Yeah, sure would be nice to see greens @ pre-shot times, instead of just in the middle ... I'm just hoping she'll eat for me when I get her home; last time I took her in, had a hard time getting her to eat until the next morning because she was so zoned out from the anesthetic. (She can't even be examined unless they knock her out.) Will definitely stick to small meals, though, tomorrow (if I can get them into her) based on what you've been writing here.
 
Glad CJ is doing so well, maybe her tooth was bothering her some and now it isn't, so she wants to eat, eat, EAT! lol Nice numbers, she is a cool, green cucumber after her vet visit! Good luck to you and Bat Bat tomorrow, let us know how it goes!
 
Yeah, I'm just hoping Bat-Bat does half as well as CJ! Will let you know how it turns out tomorrow; I'm signing off early tonight, as have to be up @ the crack of dawn (can't believe they have me bringing her in before regular office hours, but they are:rolleyes:). Have a good night, all!:bighug:

Yes, it is his first dental and going under anesthesia, so I am nervous. He will be done the afternoon. So, I am allowed to feed him 1/2 of what he would normally eat and 1/2 his dose of insulin. He probably will be there until they close at 8:30 pm and I know he won't eat for them.....And you are right, the dental is so important and I am ashamed of myself for being so remiss. I know better.

Hopefully Bubba will be hungry enough to eat on his own.

One big improvement I've already notice is CJ's breath smells so much better now. She had bad breath for awhile so I knew she was in need for a dental.

I know what you mean, Bubba has "dog breath" HA! Thanks for the good wishes. And if Bubba is in true Bubba fashion, he won't miss a meal.
 
I have had several cats that required dental extraction. Only one time did an antibiotic get prescribed...that was because of an infection in the gum at the tooth site. Basically, they are not needed for routine extraction. Good luck from Jane and Stewey.
