Hi all, it's been a while and sorry my spreadsheet isn't really updated but I still test multiple times a day and I'll say that Alex is doing really well on the Lantus, he gets 1.25u and typically has pre-shot numbers in the mid-teens (200s) with a few dips into single digits (100s) but quite well regulated.
He got dental surgery today and I know that there are a lot of diabetic kitties on this forum that have gotten teeth cleaned and extracted, and just looking for some reassurance atm, because he is very wobbly and also won't eat. Here's a timeline of the last 24 hours:
7pm yesterday: PMPS 15.3, got his full shot and ate normally
midnight yesterday: cut off food, but gave him lots extra in the evening to try to tide him over, water stayed out all night
7am: AMPS 12.1, got half shot, and a small amount of food per vet's instructions
4-5pm: vet did dental surgery (an emergency came in so he was the last of the day). They checked his blood throughout the day and it stayed solidly between 11-13.
6:30pm: came home and is extremely wobbly from the anesthesia and can barely stand. Had to help him use the litter, but he did go, and he keeps moving towards his food like he wants to eat but then can't seem to manage to remember how to use his mouth.
8:30pm (now): Still hasn't eaten, I didn't give him a shot because he can't eat and if he doesn't eat his BG crashes real hard. His BG is still around 12.
I guess my question is at what point do I force feed him a little to make sure he has food in his system? I'll be giving insulin and force feeding him tomorrow no matter what if he still can't eat on his own, but for those who have had kitties with real bad anesthesia wobbles, do you just leave them alone for the night?
I've been at this for 2 years now so I know all the basics and what to watch out for with DKA and I have ketone strips on hand, but this is his first time going under anesthesia, so hoping for some advice based on those who have gone through this particular thing.
