Possible hypo...

I just tested Bob with my alphatrak and he's at 50 (at +4.5). He's acting normal and the only thing he will eat are Friskies treats which are like 50% carbs. I tried to give him the FF with gravy and he won't touch it. Will the friskies treats help get his blood sugar up???
 
BREATHE!!! ANOTHER ONE!!!

NOW - It will take too long for the treats to raise his level. Do you have a bit of karo/honey/syrup of some kind that you can dab on his lips, tongue, cheeks, wherever you can get it that he'll swallow?

EDIT TO CATCH OTHERS: I am not able to stay with her, can one of you jump in for me? I don't want to leave her alone..
 
I have some maple syrup I will use. So far, he's acting pretty normal, but I was told that with an alphatrak that anything under 80 could cause a hypo episode. I still have an hour where his bg will continue to drop. yikes
 
how much should I get in his mouth? I got a pretty decent amount on my finger and put it on the roof of his mouth. does it have to be a certain amount?

I'll stay with you here until someone else comes - I don't want you to be alone right now.

Try just a drop of syrup then retest in 20 minutes or so afterwards. That should be enough time to at least start it trending up. Let's not do it TOO fast, we don't want to shoot him to the moon! After all, it is close to nadir...
 
Oops, cross post - what you've done should be enough - GREAT JOB!! He's OK...this is the fun part of the dance! Just LOVE to see our babies in 'normal' numbers...altho' it can be scary for us beans...
 
I am here. Let me read the posts and look at the SS. For now though 1 drop syrup on the gums if not already done and another test in 10 minutes please (30minutes from the last test)

No kibble - it takes too long to kick in and can cause them to vomit when they are this low. Not every cat has hypo symptoms but it can still cause damage if left untreated.

Please get another test in soon as its been 30 minutes from your last test.Want to see how he is doing.

How are you doing for strips?

Thanks guys - haven't updated the spreadsheet but will do so now - Bob is just lying here next to me. Ate a good amount of treats and had a drop of syrup. He seems ok - not lethargic or acting "drunk"....I've just never seen his number that low so I'm freaking out! I have been slowly introducing a no carb food and maybe it just kicked in!
 
Agree - another test to see if he is coming up or going down.. With ProZinc, you can usually figure that +6 is the watershed and a couple rising numbers after that and you can relax.

Will he eat the gravy off the higher carb? That is a good way to get a few carbs in and not fill him up.
 
good with strips. He wouldn't eat the gravy. The other cats liked it but of course the one who needs it won't eat it. he is at 110 now. at 1:00 he should start rising normally again. I did get a hold of my vet and she said to drop to 4 units in the am and pm. Seems like maybe the zero carb food might be helping a bit, but now I'm a little scared to feed it to him.
 
110 is due to the syrup. I would test again maybe in 30 mins just to be 100% sure he doesnt do anything weird when the syrup wears off.

Dose decrease sounds like a good idea. Dont be scared to feed the zero carb - is likely what is giving you these good numbers! With a reduced dose he shouldnt drop so low again, and if he does, you just drop the dose further. Thats the way into remission!

The syrup may send him higher for a short time. I would feed some regular low carb food in tablespoon amounts and keep testing every 20-30 minutes until you see three rising numbers after +6.

If he were mine, I would cut the dose in half and feed the wet low carb, monitor carefully before each shot and at nadir. Test for ketones. If he is under 200 at preshot, do the waiting thing. If you find he is too high after a few cycles, then add more insulin with the next cycle - .5 units increase. It is a much safer way to do this dance - moving from a low dose to a higher one in small amounts as the numbers guide you.

Not feeding the wet low carb means he stays in higher numbers, on more insulin. It's not the way to regulation or remission. :-D
 
Hi Sue- I will see what I can do. I'm just happy he's going back up! He's at 136 now. 'll test a couple more times to be sure...Thank you so much for your help!
