Possible hypo episode

I'm afraid. Took my diabetic to the vet on Thursday mistaken thinking she might have ketones. Turns out her BG was 49 (she wasn't showing any hypo symptoms). Vet strongly advised against insulin that night and was suggesting stopping it . The last time a vet advised against insulin for a few days she got DKA, so I was afraid,We agreed to my skipping insulin Thursday night and giving only half her regular doasge on Friday and early Sat morn and have her checked on Sat afternoon.

I should be at work right now. Told them I needed to rush home and I'm sure I will be in trouble with my job. My parents had come to take her to the vet for me and couldn't find her, she was hiding. I just knew she was sick. I found her and she looked like she did during a previous hypo episode. I gave her corn syrup, what I could get onto her tongue and there's a bunch on her face that she won't lick off.

She's in the car now on the way to the vet but I''m afraid my vet won't take her ahead of anyone else (just on case its an emergency) and there might be an hour wait.

I'm afraid and I feel awful for having done this to her. I'm trying to do the best I can for her but I apparently endangered her life with another mistake.

Support from somebody, please...

Sending prayers and good wishes for your baby. It's good you had her taken in to the Vet. We can only do whet we can do. I so understand your fear of DKA. So also understand you giving insulin. There is a way to KNOW if insulin is needed or not needed and that is through hometesting. Please click on to the link above on the main "Health Topics" page and read that information You can even order a "newbie kit" for free from Lori and Tom. This way you and kitty wont have to go through all this guessing. Hold on and I will get the link and post it for you. I'm sure others will beat me to it but I will anyway.

Thank you Mel...

Ist very important question, are you home testing your kitty's blood glucose at home?

Also sending prayers out to you...

Here is the link to all the info on home testing...Please Please learn to test at home, it is really the only way to keep this from happening again. http://felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=287

Right now she is headed to that very best place she could be, but once this crisis is over, I beg you to learn to test her at home.

We have taught lots of people over the internet to do and we can teach you too. While it seems like you are being mean to her for poking her ears all the time, it really is so much better for her than this guesswork.

The vet is the place for your kitty to be. They will be able to instantly get some sugar into her. Fingers and paws crossed that she is fine and back home again with you soon.

I assume you aren't testing at home yet because of your cat's behavior. It might seem like a lot of work at first, but it would save you a lot of trips to the vet.I went back and read some of your previous post in September. It takes a lot of time and energy (not to mention money) to bring your cat to the vet everytime you think they might be too low or too high. Wasn't there a board member that lives in your area that helped you before? Could you private message them and see if they could help you with home testing again?

I know some other members might jump on me for saying this, but any BG testing is better than none at all.Could you get someone to help you so you could do a BG at least once a day? At least then you could get some idea of what is going on with your cat.If you buy the precision meter that also tests for ketones that would at least give you some information.Right now your having to quess what is going on with your cat and so is everyone here who is trying to help you.

Thank you all for the advice. Of course I've already attempted to test her blood at home back in September and let's just say it didn't go well. Shoulda got her nails clipped before I tried. She wanted no part of it.
She was a stray who was very afraid of people. Not afraid in a timid way though, more of a nasty way. Lived outside for the first year of her life. The only human contact she allowed was with my dad who fed her. It was ten years before she let me pick her up and even now she becomes very upset if I do. She gets her nails clipped at the vet.

We all know (as someone above stated) that a simple ear prick isn't nearly as bad as all the emergency trips to the vet, but she doesn't know that.

Hillary (Maui's mom) lives near me and was nice enough to come here at a moment's notice one night to help. My cat was even more fearful tho, because there was a stranger in the house. I tried on my own a few times but it wasn't happening. She will never allow me to place the warm thing by her ear, much less wrap her up in a towel and hold still.

This is very frustrating. She definately needs her BG checked at home. I've never given a pet away (haven't had many in my life) but at this point, after 12 years of loving her I'm wondering if I should give her to someone who can care for her better. I live my life in fear of screwing up with her.

edited to add: I urine test whenever possible. Not the greatest I know but I really do care about her.
