Possible gastritis

Hi, everyone,

My sweet kitty may have gastritis (he's been experiencing intermittent vomiting and diarrhea). We went to the vet end of May and did blood work, fecal exam, urinalysis, and x-rays, and all were normal. Things improved (I broke his feeding down into smaller more frequent meals), but just in the past couple days things are acting up again. I was out of town over night Sunday to Monday and had a friend come over twice to feed him/spend time with him. Maybe this change in routine stressed him out and caused a flare up of his (possible) gastritis?

I just spoke to the vet, and she said the a next possible step is to change his diet to a novel protein source (something he hasn't tried before). Since at one point he had borderline high blood sugar and was characterized as pre-diabetic (numbers came down after a change to a lower carb, high protein, low fat food), I'm very mindful of the ME profile of any food I give him. It looks like Weruva has some options. Does anyone have experience with gastritis and/or Weruva foods? Since I'd be trying to stay away from poultry (what he gets now), my options would be their seafood (is seafood okay to give?) or their Glam N' Punk, which has the following ME profile (so nice it's on their website!):
Glam 'n Punk protein=36.4% fat =62.9% carb=0.6%

Does this seem reasonable even though the fat content is relatively high and protein is relatively low?

I'm just so scared with this new possible diagnosis :( So hard when our babies are sick.

Any advice or support would be much appreciated.

Just a note that he was fine until I returned from being away and found vomit. And then he had some diarrhea. Which is why I was thinking he was stressed bc I was away. I wouldn't have gone out of town if he hadn't been feeling well.
 
I have used Weruva products and found them good. If you go to their website you will find they give you all the amounts of fat, protein and carbs which is very helpful. Plus ingredients.
Several years ago my cat Sheba had chronic diarrhoea....all tests came back normal. I gave him plain mashed pumpkin which is very good for both diarrhoea and constipation. I used to make my own using just pumpkin cooked in water, nothing added, drained after cooking and mashed. 1 teaspoon up to three times a day. If you live in the US you can buy canned pumpkin, but make sure you buy the plain pumpkin with nothing added ..........don't use the pie pumpkin.
I also changed Sheba's diet to a raw home made diet and her diarrhoea stopped.
Changing to a novel protein is a good idea.

Another thing that is very good for vomiting is slippery elm bark powder. It coats the alimentary track like a bandage and helps stop irritation. You can buy online or at health food shops. Make sure it is pure SEB powder with no additives.
To make a SEB slurry mix a teaspoon of the SEB powder in 1/2 cup cold water, whisk til lumps gone, heat until gently boiling and boil for 2 minutes stirring all the time. Store in a jar in the frig for up to a week. You can double the mixture when making.

How do you feel about the ME profile of the Glam N' Rock? Do you think it's problematic that the fat content is relatively high and protein is relatively low? Or is the most important thing (for a cat with previously high blood sugar) that the carb content is low? It was hard bc I was trying to find a novel protein source that was also low in carbs.

I'm sorry but I am not familiar with Glam N Rock cat food....I live in Australia, so I can't comment on it.
However you do need to have a low carb (10% or less) for diabetic cats.
The protein and fat levels vary in amounts with each type of food. If you have a look at this link you can see the different amounts for the protein, fat and carbs for the 'cats in the kitchen' cans. I've been using Weruva b.f.f. for ages. It has the best numbers I could find. Levon was even in remission for over a year on this food. But we are stopping because.....Levon doesn't like fish. All the b.f.f foods are fish. So off we go to Fancy Feast.

As for stress, it absolutely can cause GI symptoms. I work with stressed animals, and it is very, very common in this population. Changing foods too quickly can also cause this. Go slow.
