Hello Lantus Land!
I'm a bad bean - I totally missed Porky's 1 year anniversary!
What a year it's been, since Porky went OTJ - where did it go? :?
For all of the new beans here, we were one of the lucky ones, I guess: Porky went OTJ after only about a month on Lantus. What a month, though - we had started out on a pretty high dose (3 units), and went through some near-hypo events, but with the help of this board and the many caring people who guided us through, we made it, and Porky is enjoying life at the Falls!
The Porkchop is doing great, BG-wise. His weight is even down a little - 19.2 pounds at his last vet check-up. He's had a few other issues this year, the most difficult to deal with being his allergy/skin condition. We tried chlorpheneramine (didn't help), a hypoallergenic diet (jury is still out on that one), and now the big guns: Temaril-P, which is a combination of prednisolone and trimeprazine. I didn't want to go with a steroid, but Porky was still licking himself raw, so I figured the risk to his BG was worth it.
The good news is that this medication is helping, and even with the higher-carb hypoallergenic food, his BG's haven't been affected at all! I've poked him at various times (pre-meal, a couple hours post-meal) and his BG's have been perfectly normal: 68, 69, once at 112. I'm tapering down his dose, so hopefully we can get him to a very small dose, or even off the medication eventually.
He's just as Pork-a-licious as ever, even more flirty and affectionate with his new meds (that's a side affect I can live with!) cat_pet_icon
So, thanks everyone in Lantus Land - Porky sends an affectionate head-butt your way, and his forgetful bean will try to post more often!
