Hello all,
I am trying to transition my girls to raw. I have purchased Primal trial size, Natural Instinct, some raw and cooked chicken liver. After a bit, they are liking it more and more. My question, in my research, I dont find much on pork or deer.
I had some deer meat - round steak in the freezer and tried it... they like it. And some pork loin that I sliced off a piece, diced it and they seemed fine with that too. I just want to make sure that those items are ok to feed???
I am considering the make at home recipes and the tasin grinder. I am looking forward to making the change as I think it would be better for them...Wish me luck, I just bought some chicken gizzards yesterday...we will try that tonite and some baked chicken leg/thighs!
Thanks for the help.

Venison is often used in novel protein trial diets and there are several venison cat foods available (EVO, Natural Balance, ZiwiPeak, Addiction, California Natural, etc), so I think you are fine with deer. Hill's uses pork in many of their prescription foods. I don't know if that is much of a recommendation, but it should be okay. I read somewhere that cats can't digest pork fat as well as other fats, but I can't find the source so I don't know how reliable that is.

Edited to add: There might be a slightly higher risk of parasites from wild deer.

KT will take down ANYTHING for a bite of pork - cutlets, roast, ANY pork. His favorite is BBQ. When he was a itty bitty kitten, I was traveling from Iowa to Texas, stopped and got BBQ sandwich. The whole time I was eating it, he was sitting on my shoulder trying to grab some of it with his paws. Never had him do that for anything else, just BBQ pork. Even 8 years later, he STILL begs for pork and BBQ.

ty very much!
My newest addition, Lil Sista, is doing the best w/ raw. She will be 4 months old soon. Sugar Bean is ok with it but seems to not like the chewing and texture much. We are working on it and I give them a small sample with every feeding. They are much better than the first day so I think it will work. Lil Sista's fur is soooo beautiful and I am sure it is from the raw. She will eat all of it but Bean is going to take a while!
I was afraid since I have not seen much on those two items, they could be bad for them. I took the fat off of the pork loin and trimmed the membrane away from the deer too. I have been using my scissors and cutting the pieces up probably as small as peas for them to get used to the textures better. I have alot of friends that deer hunt and are willing to donate so I would like to use this as an everyday food.
Again, thanks for the imput... I feel much better serving up these now.

Raw pork should not be fed because of parasite issues like salmonella. Dr. Lisa does not recommend feeding raw pork, http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?p=15977#p13374

Salmonella is a bacteria, not a parasite and is a risk in all raw meats. Cats and dogs are not as susceptible as humans to salmonella. The parasite most associated with raw pork is trichinosis (also associated with raw game). Trichinosis has been virtually wiped out of the commercial pork stock, but is still a risk in game which is why I added the warning for wild deer.
