Poppy - Glucose Curve Creation

Poppy has been on 2 u of Lantus since June 22. She switched to can food since July 2nd.

Took her to the Vet and he wants us to do a Glucose Curve by doing blood checks every hour from before the first shot. It would be done for 13 hours. Ending an hour after the second shot.

I have been reading in here. That the curve can be done every 2 hours over a 12 hour time period. The first test would be the AMPS.

Would it be possible to tell me what would be the best way to do this Glucose Curve?

A curve as we define it is either one test every two hours between shots, or every three hours for one and a half cycles. The first one gets you more detail on one cycle between shots, but the second gets you data on two shots. A glucose curve of once an hour will give you more detail, of course, but is a lot of work. My vet originally said I should do a curve as once every two hours, but every hour if my girl went under 100. I like that one, because below 100 is getting kind of low and you want to know if you should be feeding higher carb food by monitoring more closely.

Are you using the AT or the Relion now? Your spreadsheet is still set up for pet meters, but we can get someone to help you change that if you've switch to a human meter. Since you are following SGLS, that 67 today means her new insulin dose as of tonight is 1.75 units. Anything below 90 means the dose is reduced by 0.25 units.

I am using a Relion. I asked the vet about reducing the dose and he wants to wait until the curve is done.
 
if you're going to follow SLGS you don't need to ask the vet about dosing, SLGS and the miracle workers here will guide the dosing based on Poppy's numbers to get her regulated.

SLGS has rules that say, if Poppy's blood sugar goes below 90 then reduce by .25u. This is a method that was honed over time and has helped many many cats, most vets do decreases or increases in whole units but smaller increments have been proven to be more effective.

I will say that for me, coming here and making the decision to follow dosing based on a dosing method, not my vet...well it was kind of easy for me because my vet sucked and was super unhelpful with the diabetes. But I get that for a lot of people, taking that leap is difficult.

The problem with that is in the meantime, the dose may be taking Poppy into dangerous numbers. Our saying here is better a day too high than a minute too low. When following SLGS you do a curve once a week to determine if you need to change the dose, but you reduce immediately if you see a number under 90. This is for the cat's safety. Hypos can kill.

Today, I reduce the dose by .25. She is officially on 1.75. I tried to do a BG curve today. But we started the day with a low number for her. Hence, no am shot. Gave her the lower dose at their PM shot.

I agree with Kyle. I am finding that the Vets dont have the knowledge that Feline Diabetes has. And they are not always willing to listen.

But I did get the script I needed for the 3/10 ml needles.

Kyle - thanks for the tip on the magnifying glass. I actually had one from camping.

Wendy - Thank for the tip about better to be too high then two low. I think I just got that today. I have the Hypo kit setup already.
