My still newly diagnosed cat is having weakness in his back legs. This was actually the symptom that had me go to the vet and then got the diagnosis. Has anyone else experienced this and did your cats legs improve after starting insulin/treatment? And if so, how long before you saw this improvement?

its called diabetic neuropathy which sounds awful doesnt it?yes we have it. some people find it very helpful to give Zobaline (methylcobalamin) to help counteract this situation.
we are still trying to get diabetes regulated, so even though we are doing Zobaline and also getting B12 injections on top of that, my cats hind legs especially (and a little in the front as well) have been weakened. not everyone's experience is the same. some folks see a difference within weeks of being on Zobaline.

My cat, Moe was diagnosed in mid-January and neuropathy was also my main reason for finally bringing him to the vet and getting diagnosed. We got him started on insulin right away and he was regulated by the end of January. By the end of May his legs were back to normal and he was jumping up onto places he shouldn't be 
I didn't give him any kind of supplement but other people may be able to speak as to how long it took for the neuropathy to go away using something like Zobaline.
My vet said it could be as long as 6 months after we got him regulated, but it took around 3-4 for us.
It was heartbreaking to see him struggle to walk and jump onto the couch, so I know how you're feeling. Focus on getting your cat regulated and the neuropathy should improve in time.

Once your cat's glucose levels are under control, you should see some improvement. What insulin & dose are you using? Are you hometesting?
Methyl B12 will also help. But you also need a good low carb/high protein diet and good insulin to help with this. When I adopted Spot, she had very bad neuropathy - she could not walk at all on her back legs. Within a few weeks of a good diet, putting her on insulin and methyl B12, I started to see improvement. Within 6 months, you would have never guess that she could barely walk a few months before.

My Sassy's hind legs were weak. Her right leg would collapse and she couldn't stand up to eat.
This all happened very fast, but also cleared up fast once she got on insulin. In fact she went into remission in 2 weeks and regained enough strength to now be able to jump on sofa.

Thank you all for the encouragement. We've only been on insulin for 2 weeks and not yet regulated (he's not a very good patient when it's shot time). But I'm so glad to hear that improvement in his legs is possible. He loves running around and I can see how frustrated he is when he can't go too far without having to stop and take a break.
