During the past week, I noticed a small poop next to each litter box (I have two), and a small poop or two in the livingroom and one on the first step at the bottom of the basement stairs close to where the litter boxes are. I didn't know which cat was doing it, and the ones in the livingroom looked like dropped clingons, and the ones next to the litter boxes looked like near miss accidents.
Last night in the middle of the night (11:00pm is the middle of the night for me), I got up to test, and then watched as J.D. went downstairs to the litter box, and watched him do a full big poop right next to the litter box. Now, the litter box downstairs, is a high sided one (about 10 or 11 inches high on the sides), but he was peeing in it just fine when I got his ketone test, yesterday afternoon.
I did give him some Miralax yesterday morning, but have not been giving it to him everyday.
During the hurricane, I had brought both litter boxes upstairs, and while I was down in the basement, clearing the floor (carpet), J.D. had come down there with me, and I caught him peeing in the exact same place where the litter boxes used to be. I have not bought any cat pee odor eater stuff yet, for that area (I just scrubbed the area with water and dish soap). I will try to buy some next Friday, when I get paid. What kind should I get?
Since then, I put the big litter box back downstairs, last week, and left one upstairs.
Now, that I know it's J.D. doing it, does pooping outside the box, mean anything? I didn't scold him or anything. I just said good boy, when he came back upstairs. I can try vinegar and water, would that work, for now?
