Poop problems

ok you know we went to vet This week cuz i thought mr b was constipated. He's on raw diet which creates less waste but still he was off schedule.

He wasnt constipated. Last night he pooped and it was a mess of little blobs which he had to do a scootch on the rug to remove, and he had some stuck on his butt. This has happened a few times recently but i thought it was the miralax or a different food (ziwipeak) -and we had stopped both those things.

So i dont know what to do. He's got a lot going on so i dont know if the food is causing this or if his thyroid, diabetes, liver, kidneys are throwing a wrench into the works no matter what i feed him. I'm going back on canned DM (ugh!) to see if that might get things back on track, but i dont know what i'm doing.

Anyone have any tidibits of advice i'd appreciate it.

Were the little blobs runny almost liquid drops? Sometimes when a kitty is constipated there can be small amounts of liquidey poop that gets around the blockage. With raw food some kitties will only go every 2nd day and not in large amounts since so much of the food is properly metabolised. The main thing to look for as far as constipation is hard stools and/or difficulty passing the stools.

No red again this AM, Jen! Unfortunately I have no advice about the poop problem. I'm aware of the issue of constipation masquerading as a sort of diarrhea though.

I honestly dont know how runny they were. he pooped overnight so i didnt see it fresh and the litter was all over it. it wasnt a sausage of poop like normal, it was small blobs.

that's why we went to the vet - he had little blob of soft pudding the other day so I thought maybe he was constipated. she palpated him and said he was not constipated. I'm starting to feel sick, like maybe she missed something. maybe an xray should've been done. I realize the raw food creates less waste, but he should be having normal small poops sausage-shaped, not this sticky blobby stuff that he is having difficulty clearing.

I don't know what to do.

The best way to tell if there is a lot of poop in the tract is with an x-ray.

However, you also have to go on how well he is eating and acting as well. My two will have an occasional different poop than what they usually do, but if they are not having distress and are eating and drinking well and acting normal I don't worry too much about it. This is a case of you knowing what is usual for your kitty and recognizing when things seem off.

he's eating fine. no vomiting. drinking a lot as usual because of unreg diabetes and now some kidney values are up prob/might be contributing.

ok so its prob not a constipation problem but something is giving him grief. dunno if I should take him off raw, or add fiber, what kind of fiber, or something else.

My Cushing's kitty has ongoing constipation problems because of the organomegaly that come with Cushing's. I give him a tablespoon of pure pumpkin..not the pie filling or home-made pumpkin or squash..every morning. He thinks it is a treat so I am able to give it straight and add his supplements to it and he is it just fine. His sister wants nothing to do with pumpkin, but her BMs are good so it is not needed. I started off with about 1/2 teaspoon and continued increasing it as I went along. Pumpkin is actually helpful for both diarrhea and constipation and is a good natural source of dietary fibre as well as other nutrients and minerals. You could try adding some to the food and seeing if that helps with regularity.

A good raw diet is one of the better choices if Mr B will eat it, as long as you are adding the extra supplements to it.

we do add supplements. its Alnutrin. i'd give the foodfurlife brand which i've heard great things about but its got chicken stuff in it and chicken makes mr b itchy.

i like the raw and really dont want to go back to canned, so i hope i can make it work, if thats whats giving him trouble. might not be the food anyways.

i'll try the pumpkin. i think we've tried it before and he didnt like it but its been a while. i also have a flaked pumpkin product that we stopped using some time ago - again i cant remember why i used it or why we stopped. my brain is fried!

will give it a go again. thank you

so cute your boy eats pumpkin like a treat!

Alnutrin is a good supplement for the raw.

I buy the ED Smith pure pumpkin when I can't get fresh pumpkin or squash. It is fine, but quite frankly my own home-made tastes SO much better and my pumpkin lover seems to prefer the home-made to the canned. My Tuxie has always loved food of any sort so it wasn't too surprising that he went for the pumpkin as well. I was surprised though that he will just eat it on its own and thinks he is getting a special treat. ECID :cat:

not to complicate things, but i do have a collection of different kinds of pumpkins and squashes at home from the farmers market. do you know if i could just use any of them? acorn squash, butternut, sugar pumpkin, etc. i had used canned pumpkin in the past, or the tetrapak stuff, - and all organic - but maybe i'd have better luck if i cooked them up at home like you. can any cucurbits/gourds be used?

I have used a wide variety of pumpkins/squash. I have used acorn squash, butternut squash, squashkin (cross bred of pumpkin and butternut...very tasty :) ) sugar pumpkins and regular pumpkins. I have never used gourds so I don't know if they would work the same or if they are ok for kitties. I like doing them at home because then I get to lick the bowl when I am done. YUM!! ;)
