Yikes how aweful. Try putting the poop you pick up back into the litterbox so he smells it in there. Maybe he had a painful poop in the box and now thinks it hurts to poop there.

Ugg !! Maybe add a new litter box and put the poo you pick in this new litter box, if possible put the new litter box in a different location than the old ones so that he thinks this is a totally different.

Put some pupy training mats where he's pooing (makes cleaning easier) and later on move the pupy training mats near the litter boxes maybe he would catch the idea that that's the new ok place to poo

Have you considered diabetic neuropathy? How is is BG? Is he well regulated? The thing that finally led us to get Benny checked out was exactly this - his back legs were weak from the neuropathy so it was hard for him to poop while standing on an unstable surface like kitty litter. Once we got him regulated, he quickly went back to his previous tidy toileting.

If he is well regulated and the neuropathy is still a problem, you can try giving him Zobaline, a supplement based on Vitamin B. It turned out that Benny didn’t need it, but a number of folks here have used it for their cats with neuropathy.
