Well, 17 days ago (09/24/2012), we got the news that poor little Pokey has diabetes. The vet said his BG at the office was 400 which is twice what it should be. I was heartbroken and overwhelmed. I had so much to learn. Our vet started us on Purina DM dry and Glipizide. After reading stuff on here and getting helpful information from site users, we went back and changed our start-up plan to: change diet to Friskies wet food with lower calories and low <10 carbohydrates only. We started that night (09/26/2012). We already saw improvements within three days. His stool was improving, he wasn't drinking bowls of water, and he was peeing softball sized litter clumps every few hours. His stool and urine are back to normal. He even started losing some weight last week (16.5 lbs. to 15 lbs. on 10/06/2012). He's more playful and active since switching to the wet food.
I got all his testing supplies this week with my birthday money. He is worth it! I tried testing him last night before supper. The first blood draw wasn't enough, and the second was even less. He got some of what was left of his crunchy treats and then supper. I had my mom (who helped take care of diabetic people half her life) prick his ear last night. We got a good amount this time. His first reading was 69 after five hours from his last meal. A few pieces of chicken and dinner and he completely forgot about his ear. My mom again helped me test this morning after six hours after meal, and his reading was 73. Looks like diet alone is helping him SO much. We see the vet tomorrow morning. The other vet at the office will test his BG and his normal vet will call me to tell me what he thinks of the improvement. I am so proud of ourselves and he's just happy to have his meal and a little bit of plain, boiled chicken breast.
We want to thank everyone for all the helpful information, the great advice, the support, and the encouragement. Without this site, and the wonderful members, he may not have improved so much in so little time. We are blessed that FDMB exists. Thank you.
