Poked my finger THROUGH the cat’s ear…?!?!

Hi all. Pretty new at testing only been doing it about a week or two, both me and the cat still getting used to it. Today I tested the cat as per usual after her dinner and somehow I managed to not only poke all the way through her ear but into my finger as well. Using the pen and lancets that came with the keto mojo meter on the “5” setting. To be fair, the cat didn’t seem to notice or care other than disliking that I was holding her still. She got her treat afterwards and that was that. However I feel awful because the fact that the needle poked me finger definitely means it went all the way through her ear!! Is that supposed to happen?
On the lower settings of the pen I can’t get any blood to bead. But I don’t want to be shredding poor Binky’s ear either. I feel terrible and I hope I didn’t hurt her. Also, I did clean my hand right away to make sure her blood didn’t get into my bloodstream. Does anyone have any thoughts, tips, words of wisdom, etc?
 
Hello! Definitely happened to me once or twice in the beginning and I remember being mortified as well.

I now use an old sock filled with some rice like a beanie bag, microwaved for 10-15 seconds to warm up Kittys ear before poking. You can then hold the sock behind the ear when you do the poke to stop pricking yourself. I think there are a couple of tutorials and testing how to’s in the getting started forum. ☺️

As everyone says, testing does get much easier with time but it’s good to hear Binky is already taking it like a champ!
 
Hold the rice sock or a wad of cotton balls / cosmetic pads / folded washcloth under the ear to prevent the lancet from poking your finger.

Getting the ear really really warms usually means you can use a lower depth setting on the lancet device. Newbie cat ears may need a higher setting until they learn to bleed.

This is how it should look when you poke
A small rice sock under the inner ear the needle, you do not poke down but side ways

I personally have had to use 3 strips some times as well yes it has happened to all of us but the sock placed as you see in the picture that should not happen any more😉
 
New diabities cat mum here, I pricked my finger the first time too and it blumming stung like heck! I know animals are tougher but gee whiz— I turned the setting down from 5 to 4 after that pricked me (was an animal one too so ouch ouch) 🤣

At least I got to experience it so I knew what I was inflicting on m' poor boy... he takes it like a champ though bless him.
