In a half hour I'll be testing Robbie for his PM shot - last test was at amps +9 and he was at 246 - plus he had dinner - so we'll see where that goes. Not looking forward to this as I really hate making the decision - I am hoping to stick with 4.5 and see how that goes. So I have to start thinking at what point I WON"T shoot 4.5 - going to go meditate on his SS.

I'm here if you need a sounding board.
Carl

thanks Carl I'm about to test him - hang in here if you see this and can stick around while I stick his ear.

OK he's at 327 I'm feeling comfortable with 4.5 again - thoughts?
oops just realized you posted that a half hour ago... I shot 4.5 - think that's the way to go as long as he's over 300. Of course he wanted food so I did gave him a bit of watered down FF - (part of his 4 cans)

Yes, I agree with the 4.5. tonght. It's essentially the same number you had this morning (not that that means the cycle will be a duplicate of course!)
I'm also finding myself agreeing about the increase to 5 that your vet suggested, but I'd do it in steps rather than one increase. Can you eyeball 4.75?

Thanks Carl for me 4.50 is exactly MID way between 5 and 4 and it sometimes takes me 4-5 tries to feel I've landed there successfully- for the 4.75 I think I'd just go a HAIR under 5.00 which will be different than the midway mark.
Did you see that my vet has now talked about perhaps switching insulin types? My heart skipped a beat all I could think is "but everyone int he PZI group has been so kind to me" LOL He did also say we've got a way to go as he'd go up to 6 before he really recommended the switch and than still it would be based on his numbers at 6 - he also talked about the 5/6 or 4.5/5 dose situation.
Anyway, time will tell. He wants me to stick with each change for at least a week.

Except this morning I gave him breakfast with his shot this morning and tonight he got dinner 3 hours prior to his shot and only got about a 1/8 of a can with his PMPS shot.

OK, the logic would say that he'll drop more this cycle. So it will be interesting to see how it is different. And what point of this cycle would he normally eat again?

Carl

Ellen - have you tried using a Sharpie Ultra Fine Point to mark the needles? You can do a mark at the half-unit, then another at what would be 3/4 or 1/4. That helped me a LOT when using the U40s.

Although I know it freaks my vet out when I mention the U100s, it sure makes dosing easier - regardless of the dose... every 1/2 mark on the syringe = .2 units of ProZinc.

I think I might try marking the units. Thanks for the thought.

Well, when I gave him the shot he got some watered down FF - about 1/8th of a can - he's seriously NOT happy at not having more food - even though he got dinner at 4pm in his mind dinner is 5pm/5:30 and so he's still acting like I "skipped" his dinner. Typically he'd get more food at about 10/11pm and than there would be the 3am "snack" in the auto feeder.

OK, so.... like I said earlier, the food timing this cycle vs. last cycle should mean he'll drop more this cycle, since the food was 3 hours before the shot rather than with the shot. Which is fine.

The timing of his next meal, at 10 or 11 should be perfect actually. Because if the insulin kicks in around two hours after the shot, that would be 9ish. And if you were to test him between 9 and 10 and see that the BG is down like you want it to be, and not down more than you want it to be, then the food between 10 and 11 should "buffer" the drop right around nadir time and stop him from going too low. All of that is a "good thing".

And it will be interesting to see if the curves are a lot different, how the food and the insulin work with or against each other due to the different timing of shots and food. This could be educational for all of us!

PMPS +3 and he's at 251 - with 1/8 can of FF watered down in him and a few 0 carb treats. He's scouting around for food and being a pest. I'm going to give him a spoonful more right now and than give him what he'd normally gat at 11pm a tad early.

That should work out well. Not a drastic drop (75ish?) and I'm assuming this is the onset of the insulin.
