Hi, at what point do I start giving insulin? We had a bg of 236 at 4:30 today then one of 263 at 8:30 pm. Her numbers have been creeping up from below 100 to mid 100's, and now to mid 200's. should i give her a shot?

Some more questions to consider, first:

Where are those numbers with respect to eating?

Is she eating and drinking normally?

Is she urinating and defecating normally?

Does her behavior seem 'off'?

Is she in need of a dental cleaning? Infection frequently raises glucose levels.

Is she urinating frequently, but only small amounts? This can be a sign of bladder infection or stones.

Is she moderately dehydrated or more? Check by pgently ulling up on the scruff of the neck and releasing. If the fur does not snap back quickly, she is likely dehydrated.

Hmmmm... Right when she stopped insulin she slowed down on her eating and drinking. Her numbers were below 100. Now, her appetite and thirst are back but her numbers are higher. I don't think she is debydrated.

Her teeth have never been cleaned but I think her neuroligical disorder will force me to pu her down in a year or two anyways so I don't want to do anything invasive.

I will check her numbers in a bit.

I just tested her at 121. She hasn't eaten for probably 10 hours. She had probably eaten 4-6 hours prior to her high number. At what number should I worry?

Increased appetite and thirst are signs of diabetes. With the increase in numbers I would look for things that are causing her to go out of remission.

Has her diet remained low carb, wet food? If the diet is not a good low-carb, wet, try switching that to see if you can bring the numbers back down that way. Also, a diabetic cat - even on is remission - is usually better at keeping their BGs level is they eat regular small meals through the day. I see she went 10 hours without eating. Feeding 3 or 4 small, low carb meals might keep her more balanced throughout the day.

Is there any stresses in her life?

If you haven't had a vet appt in a while, it might be time to schedule on and get an exam and some bloodwork done. An infection may be causing the diabetes to creep back in or dental problems. Even if medical condition causes you to not want to do anything invasive right now, you'd at least find your source and know that you have something that will be causing her to go out of remission and will need to be looking at insulin again soon.

Well. What bg range is out of remission? She has been eating the same wet food for a while now. She has zero stress and is totally spoiled. ;) i will send the numbers to my vet but she always seems a bit complacent. :|

Our general range for a cat in remission, off insulin, is from 40 -120 with the majority of the time in double digits. She seems close. What % carb are you feeding? Sometimes reducing the carb value from say 8 to 4 can bring down the levels. I also like the idea of several small meals during the day. (Automatic feeders are great for this if you don't have one.)

I can't remember, I think it is 6%. It is the only canned she likes. I have cans of all kinds in the pantry that she won't touch.

I shared the numbers withthe vet. She thinks she may have 'converted' and advised me to check her blood 3 times a week.
