Jen and Cobra

New Member
I have a diet controlled 8 yr old cat who had what looked like a hypo episode this am. Cobra has been off insulin for over a year. This morning he was very confused and could barely stand. He would not eat and almost fell down the stairs. After managing to get several high carb treats in him he improved dramatically. Has anybody ever experienced this? After the treats I took a reading and it was 108. Since being insulin he has been getting readings of about 72. He is currently eating Wellness canned and Evo no grain varieties.

Not likely to be hypo if he isn't on insulin, but I'd be getting him to the vet early next week and getting them to check out whether there is something neurological going on!

Hugs

Jen

It is rare for a cat to be hypoglycemic if it is not receiving insulin. There is a condition, but I can't quickly find it.

If Cobra were my cat, I would take him to the vet or an emergency clinic. There clearly was a neurological event. The "recovery" with a high carb treat may have been coincidence, or not.

It is extremely unlikely that your cat had a hypoglycemic event (you're thinking of insulinoma, Venita, but you're right in that it is incredibly rare in cats). It is more likely that your cat had some kind of heart or brain event related to high blood pressure or heart disease. You need to get him to your vet or the ER TODAY, don't wait until Monday. Please don't wait -- you wouldn't want your caretaker to wait if it was you that had a staggering-around, mentally confused episode this morning.
