i posted this to the crf yahoogroups but wanted to post it here too in case anyone had any experience with this. thank you.

I wanted to give an update about my cat Sam. I posted about him on May
27th. Here was part of my post from then and his numbers. Here are his
number from blood work May 27.
BUN 22
Crea 1.8
BUN/Crea 12
Phos 3.9
So all those are normal but when he checked the urine there are the
numbers/results.
1.037 SP.G
+++ blood
++white cells
+++ protein
PCV 27
TP 7.8

the vet said he wanted to have him come back the next day to do a CBC. He
got that done ont he 28th i think and I wasn't able to get the copy (will
get it tomorrow) yet but on the phone he said everything looked pretty
good except I think he said the pcv had dropped aother point but i'm not
sure. He said the other parameters on the rest of the panel for the red
count looked good. I said my cat was still not feeling well at all but he
said that he just had mild anemia and didn't sugest treating it. He said
that I should just treat the underlying cause which he said was crf. it's
kind of strange because his bun creat and phos are all normal. i asked
him if there could be another cause of the anemia. he said no that he
thought it was due to chronic disease, that disease being the kidney
disease.

he was diagnosed with that about 6 months or so ago with an creatanine of
3.6, bun was normal the vet at the time immediately put him on benazapril
and no sub q. aobut three weeks ago, when his creat was 2.8 the vet
suggested continuing the benazapril but adding 60 to 90 ml subq twice a
week.

on the 27th, a few days ago, in light of the 27% pcv, this other vet put
him on clavamox, azodyl and said to contine the benazapril and fluid.

here is the problem. he is not doing well at all. he is just laying
there on the bed, he very weak, wehn he walks he almost tips over, he last
more weight today and is down to 6.2. even though the vet said to wait
until tomorrow when they are open to get subq i gave him 100 ml this
morning because he is barely eaitng or drinking although he is still
eating a little bit.

i don't know what is wrong with him. i feel more thorough testing should
be done. at this point he seems to be dying. from what i have read on
the internet, he seems to have many signs of anemia including weakness,
loss of appetite, not grooming himself.

also, i just read on the internet site felinecrf.org last night that the
antibiotic and azodyl should not be given togehter but several hours apart
which i was not doing because the vet never mentioned that. what is the
result of giving those two things together? now i am not of course but the
first 4 deays of the antibiotic i was.

what should i do next? I feel like maybe he should be treated for the
anemia. If so, what treatment should he get? should he get the epogen?
how long does that take to work> or vit b? what kind of vit b and in
what form treats anemia? shots? vit b in the subq bag?... iron? do they
test for iron in the blood work? what is it listed on so i could look for
it or ask for it next time.

what other tests should he have to determine of something else is going
on? xray, ultrasound?...other bloodwork? gasto panel? ...

how do you know if your cat has stomach bleeding or whatever it is called
that also causes anemia?

something is going on with him that is making him feel extrememly ill and
i don't know what it is. please please help me and my cat. i dont want
him to die and that is the road he is going down.
thanks you so much. sorry this is son long. he needs immediate help. i
just don't know what to do. i can't afford to take him to emergency
today. i am supposted to work tomorrow. the only way they will see im
tomorrow is if i leave hi there all day which i would rather not do. i
could prob get an appointment wed night but i'm not sure if he can wait
that long.

I am so sorry Sam is ill. he needs a second opinion. Your vet IMHO doesnt sound like he knows whats going on. You might PM KarenRamboConan.. her Astrophe had oh shoot..feline infectious anemia???

I am not a vet, but I think that he is NOT a CRF cat. I think he might have had some kind of kidney infection that is now resolved re: kidneys but causing that blood in the urine. It is also possible he is bleeding from somewhere due to crystals or something, causing the anemia. I agree that I think his anemia needs to be at least evaluated by someone else in light of the test results. Benazepril helps the blood pressure in the kidneys but I have no clue what it would do for anemia. It is given for CRF cats although it is prescribed more in the UK for CRF, not as much in the US.
ah, http://members.verizon.net/~vze2r6qt/ace_inhibitors/
Looks like because of the blood in urine your vet gave the benazepril..

Hi Sara and Buttercup,

Sorry to hear about Buttercup. Unfortunately, I'm not one to give out advice for this (although Albert's been CRF for 2 years now), but I crossposted your message on Community for more exposure. I didn't see that you had cross-posted. Apologies if you did.

Let us know how Buttercup is doing.

Becky and AJ

Sara, How is buttercup doing? Did you go to the vet today?

I am in somewhat of the same situation - only Sweety's Creatinine is rising. 2.5 (on a scale of 2.1 being high). Gave them a urine sample and the vet called today saying (message on machine) that her urine is "on the dilute side" and it had bacteria, blood and white blood cells, meaning infection. He will start her on antibiotics and we will check the blood work in the future. He is concerned her kidneys are starting to fail. I have to call him tomorrow...

I know how you feel, and I am sorry for us all (you, me, Sweety and Buttercup) :(
I hope Buttercup is feeling better soon.
