Hi there, my cat Socks is currently on 2u prozinc, and I use an alphatrak 2 meter. He is on a canned food that I was told by the company is only 2% NFE carbs. Ever since switching from hills rx m/d diet, I've been seeing VERY high (black) PMPS numbers, but he has had low +6 readings at the same time. I was JUST suggested by another member to consider that this may be Somogyi effect, as apparently, I've been told that low BG levels can cause crazy spikes/bounces in the sugar for days to come - which by looking at my spread sheet, would kind of make sense.

I'm posting this as I did a sort of curve on Sock's yesterday, and he was very low even at his 10+ reading, so i reduced insulin from 2.5 to 2 and was not able to check his BG after that - but when I got home at 3am from an airport pick-up, he seemed awake and hungry so nothing like hypo symptoms (although I know it can be asymptomatic).. As I only had 3 hours of sleep, I did not think to worry to test his sugar for his AMPS, but I woke and noticed a large clump of pee in the litter box. So I checked him, and not to my surprise, today, his 5+ reading, he was 372.

Just gave him his dinner, and confused to see that his PMPS reading BG is 369 and I'm worried to reduce his insulin further to end up making his sugars just too high but maybe that might be what it takes.. Any suggestions would be so greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
J

When you got the really high #'s, did you do a 2nd test? We have found on occasion that when we test a 2nd time, it's been considerably lower....like it's a faulty strip? Not sure......as you can see from our spreadsheet, we're also bouncing....we've been high all day today, but trying to keep the dose the same....it's been a tough ride. What food are you feeding? I kept Ruckus at 1 unit tonight, and I would recommend that you keep Socks on 2 units.....try to keep the dose the same...I wouldn't reduce it unless you see his #'s below 300.....we're on 1 because Ruckus just can't make up his mind between 170 and 400.....

No unfortunately hadn't ever used a second strip, especially with the expense of them.. but a few times have checked the meters accuracy with very odd BG readings, and they were always normal.

I just tested his sugar at 5+ in, and it's 263.. So definitely in an okay-range for tonight, thanks for the advice. I will keep him at this for now and try to keep a closer eye on him. The frustrating part is that he has tooth resorption, so needs possibly all of his teeth extracted, so am always wondering if it's causing this fluxation, but a lot of the times - his BG readings are fairly normal, and i truly don't have the $900 to get them removed through my local humane society,

And wow, sorry to hear about Ruckus's numbers, and i'd be okay with even always under 400, but it was the high 600 numbers that really started making me worry to get him better regulated. I'm sure glad I've stopped the rx m/d diet, as it was just making his fluctuations even greater. Thanks for the help...
