My Mitzy is about 9 years old, I found her as a stray 6 years ago. She unfortunately has Asthma and Diabetes. We managed her diabeties with prescription food and Glipizide for about a year now. Since Tuesday (today is monday) She has been experiencing Ketoacidosis and diabetic neuropathy, she has not been eating on her own and my vet is now worried about pancreatitis. I am supposed to go in in the morning and get proper syringes and pain killers for her. We are still using the gliptizide for her BG levels, not insulin shots. I do not have any tools to test her myself over tonight.
I have educated myself extremely on all of this, and I am feeding her babyfood and chicken broth through small syringes. She is not vomiting, but I am begining to worry because she looks like she is about to pass away right now. not only can she barely walk due to the neuropathy, her eyes became very dialated and glazed and she has her mouth hanging open slightly, it is noticable because she never does that. She does not smell like acetone, and aside from a treated kidney infection her bloodwork has been and has stayed perfectly fine.
I picked her up today from the vet today after her being there since wednesday. we thought getting her out of the kennel would be good for her, but she already looks like she has declined since this afternoon.
I am very worried on what to do right now. My vet has an emergency 24 hr service, where I can bring her in and drop her off, I am uneasy with her being in the kennels and alone, but she looks as miserable here as she does there and I worry she will lose her vision since her pupils have become very dialated seemingly quickly. I fed her 12 ml of beef baby food and chicken broth mixed, and then again at 8 with 9 ml of the same with her gliptizide mixed into it, the same dosage plan we have had for a year is what I was told to do.
My vet told me to jugt get her eating. Unfortunately there was an accident and she was rushed into a surgery when I went to pick Mitzy up so I did not get the oppurtunity to speak with her about this until I was home, where she did not seem to be declining, though this came fast and is getting worse.
What should I do? I feel like when i feed her she gets worse.
Should I bring her into the emergency vet?
This is terrible, this cat has been my world and this is my worst fear.

I would go to an emergency vet rather than your usual vet. You cannot take care of DKA on your own and it can be deadly fast. They will probably give her insulin (which is much better for her than Glipizide)

from what I was told her blood sugar has been fine, is it better to have her in a kennel and getting painkillers and insulin or here away from stress but miserable still?

please, anybody having advice to help, I am waiting on a call back from the vet but they might not get back to me, having a hard time finding the right number that I need.

I would take her to the ER. They can test her blood sugars and treat her with insulin, and any fluids and like you said pain killers that she may need. Just make sure that they also address the eating and get food into her, so that she doesn't get Fatty Liver from not eating.

I hope she is okay, and fights.

J.D. had DKA and was hospitalized for 8 and 1/2 days. He was taken there in critical condition, and it was an hour and a half drive to get him to the hospital. Many cats survive DKA. Think possitive. Prayers for you and your kitty.

The vet has told me that her blood sugar has been managed perfectly fine with the Gliptazide but it i the pancreas and the not eating we are worried about.
and after talking to her just now she told me she was unsure if anything they had would help at this point, that maybe she just needs to rest and de-stress for a night. a week out of home for the first time in 6 years must be stressful.
I guess we just wait.
her breathing seems to have gotten much more strained in the past 5-10 minutes. I am trying my best to not be a hypochondriac over every little sneeze she has but when she is not moving, then shows a new twitch or symptom it is hard not to notice.
I guess I am fuzzy on what to do still
also she told me not to bother feeding her anymore tonight, let her rest for a while. she had fluids at the vet earlier so she should not be dehydrated.

You need to get this cat to an ER vet or you stand a good chance of losing her tonight. If she is struggling to breath, her blood is most likely acidotic. Stop posting and find an emergency vet to help her.

noticed her gums were white and gave her almost 6 ml of water, i could hear her breathing getting stressed and dont want to make things worse so that is all i am doing for now. but her breathing is increasingly sounding like a bad sneeze.

I am very much aware, I just spoke with my emergency vet so it is not like I am ignoring her signs. I notified them again, she will call me in just a moment and I will bring her in. So very scared.

brought her to the vet, she walked to the litterbox and used it on her own and was moving much better right before i brought her. my vet is an incredibly caring woman who lives next door to the animal hospital, so she will be there with her and i will be picking her up tomorrow afternoon and continuing making her better.
trying to stay hopeful.
thankyou. very much

I hope the vet is able to help her.
Prayers for your Furbaby.

Perhaps tomorrow we can all help you get started in testing her...
and help treat her neuropathy. I am hoping so.

I am going to take the 911 down.
her blood glucose is perfect and has been staying perfect, we are monitoring her.
This morning she was batting kibbles of food around her kennel, so the pain meds made a huge difference.
I feel I ma have overreacted on her breathing, she does have asthma.
I am getting proper syringes and she is getting sub q fluids. all I can do now is love her and keep food and meds in her like I am supposed to.
I am hoping that just being at home will help and change her lethargy a bit, the more she moves the better her neuropathy was getting.
trying to stay positive!

Got my Mitzy home today.
she is on orocam for pain, cyproheptadine for allergies and her breathing, Tumil k+ powder for potassium to help her with appetite and gliptizide for her blood glucose, which has not gone up or down, remains where it should be. she has times where she looks better, then goes back own for a while, then looks better, then stays down for a while. It is all still up in the air for her, just giving her love and a positive environment, though I fear she is losing her eyesight. Pupils are very dialated. Have remained that way. =[

I'm glad you took her to the vet and you have a very caring vet.
Did you ask her about the dialated pupils? I know when my cat was first diagnosed with diabetes his eyes seemed dialated more than normal. I hope those good times keep coming. Keep imagining her well. And I know you are giving her lots of love

. Keep eating and keep fighting Mitzy.

Have they checked her blood pressure? High BP may cause vision loss.

Glipizide does not work well for cats and prevents the pancreas from healing, which it could do with insulin.

hello and welcome to the board

How is she doing now?

Did you know that may cats can go into remission if they are fed a low carb wet food (prescription wet is ok depending on the brand but many of us use things like Fancy feast classic pates, or frisks pates - no dry food) PLUS a good insulin like Lantus? Usually within 6 months of doing both as well as home testing.

Remission won't happen on glipizide and as BJ said, it can even prevent remission. Want to know more? We see remission fairly often here with these things in place.
