First, special prayers for all the people whose situations are grave, or who have lost someone. I wish I had a nickel for every Episcopal minister I put up against the wall until they swore that my critters would be around if I went to heaven, so I could make up for times I treated them as less than human. This life is a shadow, in which our friends, those who care for us, those we care for, are the moments of clarity.

Re Patty Cake, so far I sort of pre-fired the vet who wouldn't go for home testing. I found one who might. Patty Cake's breath still smells very faintly of acetone to me. I will try to test her again, but she seems OK. She is only eating Fancy Feast classic patés at this point, with the gravy out of the Gravy Lovers variety drizzled over them.

A fairly long period of food change and change of location ended for her two weeks ago. She seems to have gained back a little weight since then. Her stomach feels fat. She spends a lot of time outside - though safely enclosed, as she cannot climb a fence. She eats grass out there (don't know if that's OK).

I heard today that fructosamine tests are an average. PK only had one. I watched numerous ear poke vids. I located all the equipment at WalMart. I watched how the glucometers work. I probably should go ahead and try testing her to see where she is, even before seeing a vet. I guess I am somewhat conditioned not to act without a vet. Of course, I don't have any insulin. One vet I talked to was familiar with the long-lasting forms of insulin.

PK is licking her paws a bit. Because (apparently) of a car accident, she walks with a little limp. Because she had her front claws removed, she kneads and scratches off with her front paws. She is still doing some of that. She is weaker, jumping, but she's still got good situational awareness. Actually she's fine, but still a bit limp.

Where do you live? One of our members may live close to you and could suggest a vet. Also, some of our members can teach people to home test.

Have you read the ear testing tips document? ear testing tips

I think I can do the testing. I watched all the vids. PK will sit still for it. The problem is, I don't have a vet prescribing insulin right now. I have to tell one clinic tomorrow that I'm going to home test. There was one clinic that said they might be willing to work with me. (She asked me if I was a technician - just from slinging the lingo.)

I think everything is OK. She seems better rather than worse. I can't measure her intake without cooping her up, I don't want to do that yet. She's eating almost all lo-carb FF. (Except for some grass.) I just have to move ASAP to get a vet. Tomorrow I will probably find out if her blood work and fruc test were horrible or just bad.

There are enough vets here. What I really want to know if there's a good surgeon, but that's a dog thing not cat.

I would start trying to test, but as I said, it's hard to do something like that without Mommy's permission. If she didn't seem good I would be more urgent about it. If I don't manage to get a vet lined up in 2 days I will go on and test. I saw how it worked. But it's that "without a net" aspect that is slowing me up.

You have our permission to test your cat to monitor her diabetes!

Do you ask you doc permission to take your temperature?
No, you just do it when you think something might be wrong or getting better, or if you're trying to get or avoid becoming pregnant.
