Picky eater

My Abigail is the pickiest eater in the world and I really don't know what to do. She refuses wet food so I fork out the $50 a bag for Young Again dry food. Now it seems she is tired of that. I know she is hungry and willing to eat because she ate tuna, ham, turkey, and chicken from me. And she is very vocal when she is hungry. She will meow and meow. I have tried all of the tricks. Fortiflora, Parmesan cheese (which its funny it didn't work because she will try to take your finger off if you are eating cheese she loves it). And as of this morning tuna is not good enough for her either. So I fed her a ton of turkey this morning. Her BG levels are not scary low but I still want her to eat. I have a feeling what happened. Her Young Again ran out last week before the bag came in the mail. So I had to get a small bag of grain free food. I fed it to her for a few days then boom Young Again comes in and she will not eat it. So I have messed up her pallet now. Anyone have a food that their cats really like? Any tips you have I may not tried?

I have a picky eater too. And I think you are right... getting the other food messed up her pallet and she's holding out for better.

Have you tried fancy feast appetizers?... just a bit on top of her canned. I know someone else does that.
And I usually have to switch around a lot on the canned food. I can't even feed the same thing two meals in a row.
I would also say to try grinding up some of the young again dry and sprinkle it on top.
Here's my list of canned.
I recently discovered the fancy feast chunky chicken and hope to find the turkey version when we go to the city this Saturday.
Look at the food list and see if you find some you haven't tried yet.
That might get her inspired.
The nature's variety rabbit tends to get mine started when she hasn't had it in a while.

The worst part is she is diabetic so she MUST east something. I can't give her a shot and no food and she can't go on with no shots. It's just a vicious cycle. She is such a brat. She is very spoiled and has been her whole life. My others will eat anything I put in front of them!
 
Have you tried some of these other tips from Dr. Lisa Pierson's Transitioning Cats from Dry to Wet article. I'm not saying you need to switch her
totally to wet. I'm saying you might apply some of these same ideas to the dry food she will eat.

Topping the food with a treat.
Mixing the treat in with some of the food.
Chip and dip method.
Smash dry food up that she will eat and sprinkle on Young Again dry.
Use her natural hunger to get her to eat. If she free feeds usually, take the food up for a few hours.
Crumble freeze dried food over food you are trying to get her to eat. Halo Liv-a-Little freeze dried chicken crumbles to a powder. So do freeze dried liver treats from Whole Life.
 
It is a vicious cycle.

I think the dry food makes it more complicated with shots.
It stays in the system longer because it is metabolized differently. And I can't imagine how to steer numbers since it's the gravy foods/honey/
ice cream(whatever is used) ....to bring them up if they are really low.

You've definitely got a bigger challenge.
And they aren't as hungry when they eat the young again.... some cats only eat 2 Tablespoons a day ( depending on the size of the cat)

She definitely has to eat. If you can ever get her to a wet food diet, you might have more control. But I know that's a big if.....


I have the same problem and we don't have the dry food in the equation.
 
I found a food that she has been eating! It may not be as perfect as Young Again, but I can't have her eating lunch meat and tuna. I also picked up Nature's Variety Raw. They are frozen patties. All of my cats were into that. So I may be able to get them all into the raw diet. It's awesome. I found this cool little pet store. They do grooming and they only sell the higher quality foods and snacks. Some of them are actually home made! I am so happy she decided to eat this food. It's been killing me for over a week. I might get lucky though and get them all to transition to raw. I am familiar with Dr Lisa's methods. She has some great tips. I've been trying with my Abbey girl. She is my super special girl. Super picky but very lovable.

For Michelangelo, I've discovered it all comes down to texture. Same with Henry, to an extent, but he'll eat anything if you sprinkle a little freeze-dried chicken on it. With Michelangelo, however, I have to add just the perfect amount of water so it's chunky like a thick milkshake but not too watery. He's so picky about it that I spend at least 10 to 15 minutes preparing their food each mealtime to make sure I have the right water ratio for his discerning tastes. But, then he'll go and eat the leftovers in their bowls all day long with no problem! ohmygod_smile
